UNC Wilmington vs Quinnipiac vs Hofstra

Even though I am convinced that you will love UNCW, I would still urge you to visit before deciding if possible. I am also from NC and relocated 6 years ago and love it as does my daughter who is also attending our state school. The people (Many of us are transplants. I actually meet more transplants than natives.) are very friendly and inviting. You will LOVE the weather! Still why not visit and see if reality match the image you have of the school.

As for your mom, no parent should drop by without permission. I am amazed how little free time my daughter has at times. An unplanned visit by us would really be disruptive.

@noname87‌ I am also convinced that I will absolutely love UNCW. You have a point about visiting, but I don’t want to put my deposit down so late that I lose out on quality housing. And I totally agree with your second point. College students have less free time than most realize.

You can still make a deposit and make the final decision after visiting. I think it is crazy to decide to go to a school for four years without visiting. Sometimes if the money is not there or it is just not possible then you have no option. In your case, it is drivable and the cost of visiting shouldn’t be too high hopefully.

@noname87‌ That is the plan; make the deposit this month and make a final decision after all necessary visits have been conducted.

I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised by how many “northerners” are in Wilmington. It is a great town with tons to do on the weekends. I’m from Wilmington and would move back there in a heartbeat!

My daughter was looking at UNCW and we really liked the campus, the kids, and the programs they offer. It has a great reputation. Here in NC it is right behind UNC, NCSU and ASU for difficulty of acceptance for the state schools. Because the out of state tuition is so much better than northern schools there are lots of kids their from NJ and NY and that whole area, you will not be alone. The campus is a little flat and barren, but it is the coast. You should visit for sure, but it sounds like it will be a good fit for you. You don’t have to move here, I think college is a great time to move away from your comfort zone, and to a new area for four years. And your parents might enjoy visiting you often!

@treehuggermom‌ Wilmington seems like a very vibrant city, and it’s surely the best city remaining on my list. I would never want to leave!

@ITBgirl‌ It’s got an excellent reputation. I’d say that UNCW is better than ASU, and is equal to NCSU. I’m sure it’s the best possible fit for me; hence why I wildly celebrated when I was accepted in January  And college IS a great time to try something new. If I end up not going to UNCW (my parents might actually have a final say in this), then I definitely won’t be at all happy.

I agree it has a great rep, ASU has just become wildly popular recently (my child HATED it) and is harder to get into than it has been in the past. Hopefully your parents will get on board, but I do understand, I am thrilled that my daughter is staying in NC

@ITBgirl‌ Amen to that. I’m really hoping that I’ll be able to go in the end.

Actually, it turns out that I’ve never been away from my mom for more than a day, not a week. Well, darn.

@‌lbad96 sounds like any separation is going to be an adjustment, it is something to consider when making your desciaon.

Luckily Wilmington is a very easy place to visit. I dream about going there every February (when I’m snowed in up here!) If you go home a couple times a semester and your mom comes down a couple times a semester, you should be fine. It’s a matter of patience, and you have that already–after all, you waited all this time to see what school you’d get into.

@ITBgirl‌ well, yeah. But as much as I love my family to death, I feel that I need to spread my wings and fly like a (sea)hawk! :stuck_out_tongue:

@redpoodles‌ I got admitted to UNCW in January, but I guess you are right in the sense that I’m waiting till possibly the end of the month before I send in a deposit! Wilmington seems so gorgeous and the people are so warm and inviting. Plus, with this harsh winter, one would surely understand why any northerner would want to leave.

@ibad96 It is grest that you are so enthusiastic about -UNC-W but how can you be so sure without ever having personally visited the College? Its. Like going on a blind date. You can have great conversation beforehand and even see what your date will look like, but until u actually meet in person you cannot be sure if you have any chemistry. What if you visit and the feeling is different from what you imagine it will be? Don’t give up your slot at your other schools until you visit.

@rgr717‌ I am not disagreeing with you, but that would mean that I would have to wait until April 18th to send in a deposit. Waiting that long would mean that I would lose out on the housing my roommate and I both want.

Btw, it’s LBad.

Aren’t you going to go and visit ?

@MYOS1634‌ of course!

So, it won’t be “sights unseen”. If after visiting in April you realize you made a mistake, there’s still time to deposit elsewhere, visit Quinnipiac, etc.

@MYOS1634‌ that sounds like a great plan!

We’ve had a pretty miserable winter here in Wilmington too. I think that frozen stuff fell from the sky TWICE.
