UNC with Low Class Rank

Is it possible to get into UNC with a low class rank??

Top 25%???

I screwed up during the beginning of my sophmore yr getting 2 Fs, and Cs
but got As and Bs every since

ended up with

Weighted GPA: 4.20
Unweighted GPA: 3.325

any chance for UNC???

SAT is 1360 by the way and im in-state

what do u ppl think???

shoo-in in state

er... shoo-in with 2F's?? not if (s)he doesn't explain the grades away...

wats a good way to explain them away??

Not a shoo-in at all. UNC is heavier on grades than SATs for in-state, so it's a tossup.

You're probably in.

alebed01, what happened that you got F's? did you just not care? i mean, it takes a LOT (of slacking, not caring, OR of extenuating circumstances) to get an F, even in an impossibly hard class, let alone in two classes.

i had trouble paying attention during that time.. due to ADD syndrome.. do u think this is a good explanation??
i later go the problem fixed and ended up w/ 5s on AP exam..
and high 700s on SAT IIs..

is there anything else i can do to ensure my chances

i have good stats overall..
and thats the only semester i did bad in...
and its driving my GPA down horribly..

its 7 point scale here by the way...

Take summer school and replace those Fs to As

i def. think ADD's a good explanation. get your counselor to mention it in his/her recommendation for you.

and you should do what vehement suggested if you can--it's gonna show initiative (that you're not using ADD as an excuse [not that i don't think it's valid]/now that you've gotten a better handle on courseload you're willing to go back and fix things).

are you on adderall or concerta now?

does summer school really have help a let w/ college admissions???

Alebed, your 3.3 GPA is going to hurt you...especially your Sophomore year. If you have a valid reason, make sure you mention it. Your SAT is well above the in-state mean for UNC, so you are fine there. The good news is, your Junior year and first of of your Senior year are going to count a lot more than your sophomore year. And 5s on your APs will certainly count for something. In all, I think your chances are decent but not great.

By the way, I have ADD too and like you, my grades were not that good (3.5 GPA). But I never mentioned it in my application because I was not diagnosed with ADD until I was in university. Ironically, the only school that rejected me was UNC! LOL But I was out-of-state.

alebed01- hey, i have a very very similar situation to yours. i am in state too, i applied early to UNC and got deferred... (bad grades one year, SAT 1460 above UNC's ave which is like 1250 or maybe not even quite that) last year my grades were terrible. i didn't fail any classes but i did not do well at all compared to the As and Bs i usually got (2Cs and a D). in addition to something fairly traumatic that happened at the beginning of last year, i was diagnosed with ADD also, and while i do not blame either of those things entirely for my bad grades, i do believe they played big a role. i agree with what everyone else on here is saying.. keep doing well and make sure you explain your grades. my counselor told me that i probably won't have a problem getting in RD (not guaranteed but most likely) since i got all As and Bs first semester of this year... your situation is probably even better than mine b/c your grades dropped your sophomore year and mine dropped my junior year. as long as you've done well since then, you have more As and Bs to show that you are capable of doing well at carolina. also, your high SAT will help balance the grades.. plus, in-state... very, very, very helpful. where in NC are you from? good luck to you!

alexandre- where are you going to school?

I dont know about instate, but UNC from what ive seen is killer to get into out of state. my friend was deferred early with a 1470/3.96 unweighted.

2 "F"s? Good luck! The "C"s already kill you.
