I just learned that CAL and UCLA uses "uncapped" UC GPA. How is this GPA calculated? Are they computed from 10 and 11 grade, like the eligibility index?

Stats from CAL website, freshman class averages:
Average unweighted GPA
3.91
Average weighted GPA
4.34

Are these weighted averages uncapped or capped at 8 credits? Does CAL/UCLA look at unweighted GPA, capped weighted GPA, or uncapped weighted GPA. I am totally confused....

They use the grades from 10 and 11 grade on a 1 to 4 scale, and add up to 8 more points for AP classes. That gives you your weighted GPA. If by uncapped, you mean that it can be above 4.0, then yes the weighted GPA is uncapped.

Actually, all gpa’s on shown on your application: unweighted; weighted-capped; and, weighted-uncapped. Moreover, your app shows your gpa “rank” based on all applicants to UC from your HS.

@liquidus is wrong.

All UCs except Berkely and UCLA use a capped GPA, meaning that you can not give more than 8 weighted extra points for your weighted UC gpa. Those 2 schools dont, so if you exceeded 8 ap/ib classes, then you can add ALL of the extra points for a weighted uncapped gpa. For example, an UW UC gpa could be 3.6, a W UC gpa could be 4.02, and then your ucapped W UC GPA could be 4.43.
