Uncommon App switch to Common App

Hello all,

As a current U of C student, I am extremely saddened by President Zimmer's decision to switch to the Common Application. My fellow students and I voiced our concerns, and clearly the administration did not care to listen.

The voices of prospective students, however, may be of more interest to the administration (especially if this whole issue is as ranking-driven as it seems). I know that I would have been even more saddened at the thought of losing our beloved application if I were still a prospective student. After all, the application instigated my initial attraction to this wonderful place!

So, if any of you prospective students share my concerns, would you please voice them? The future of the university depends on you in so many ways! Since the administration has now made it pretty much clear that they are going to switch to the Common Application, perhaps you could suggest two application options, so that those students who wish to fill out the traditional Uncommon Application still have the opportunity.

Thank you so much!

I thought it wasn't officially announced yet. Or so I heard from a credible source 2hrs ago.

I hope it wasn't! Felipe, you're probably right. =)

This is Anya, by the way.

Still--

PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS, PLEASE COMPLAIN!!

Thank you.

It's done. The switch was made...

At least they're still keeping the Uncommon Application as an option, right? =/

I'm very happy they're keeping the Uncommon App as an option. Still stinks, but much better than losing it completely.

I've heard that U of C students have a tradition of making t-shirts to voice their opinions... I suggest a shirt that reads "UnCommonly Good... University of Chicago Uncommon Application"
If I get in EA, I am definitely making one.

I loved the uncommon app.

And now, I have 9 more days to find out if I loved it enough.

we did a shirt that read "I am Uncommon"

Oh, I love Chicago. :0] I would have been devastated, though, had they not kept the Uncommon App as an option.

To see posts of prospective students complaining

The comments on the Uchicago blog are beginning to be scary. Honestly, that one person who said that he/she wanted to "take to the streets" and "bring on the pitchforks" sounds crazy. I thought I was applying to a intellectual institution that attracted people with moderate leanings, not revolutionaries out of Le Miserable. But the fact that only one person posting went crazy is comforting, although I do feel sorry for Libby.

lol...it adds to the fun i'm sure. perhaps pitchforks are a bit to physical.

bring on the Psi Waves!

P.S: i wouldn't be too sure about moderate leanings......not that i know that much anyway. i'm always partial to extremes. they make for an interesting life no? as long as its still rational that is.

I love the Uncommon app....that's the main reason I'm applying to Chicago this year................Now I've read the whole statement from the president....i think it's not as bad as I had imagined................they are only using the commonapp in place of the personal information page........the essays will remain the same............but Uncommon App was the best...................

it's a great thing they are going to the common app. the uchicago essay topics were the reason i didn't apply in the first place. yeah yeah.. the student body would say that if i didn't like the un-common application then i shouldn't be there, but nothing about the school or any opinions i have heard tells me that. it is only the application.

Q. E. D.

Chicago. QED.

sreis........Chicago has kept its essay.....You won't have a choice, you have to write the uncommon essays. Its just filling out your personal information that can be done through the commonapp. So, you're still in the problem of yours...........

yeah i eventually read that.. if they keep the essays, what exactly are they giving up? is this just nominal?

I really hope the system wouldn't get modified until the 2009-2010 school year, because the uncommon application is one of the reason I love UChicago. I would hate the idea of having Common Application as an option when I apply there. But on the plus side, they still kept the essays, so it's not too bad.

^^^^^^^^^^Same here...............
