UNC's premed advising....is it that bad?

I've heard some horrible stories about UNC's regular counselors, but how's the premed advising? I know that they don't write recommendation letters and there's no formal advising board, but will they prepare you for med school applications?
For example, do they have mCAT study sessions, mock interviews, resume correctors, and essay readers?
How easy is it to get close to those people adn the professors that you'll eventually need recommendation letters from?
And do the pre-med track classes actually prepare you for the mCAT?

I really have disliked advising (even honors advising) but my pre-law adviser is super. I know this doesn’t help you but I think when the advisers are more specialized then they’re better.

The fact that they don’t write recommendation letters is nothing out of the ordinary. Most advisors don’t. You get those from faculty, such as teachers or research mentors, who get to know you in a more academic/intellectual setting.

Okay, well, my personal experience with the premed advising office wasn’t particularly helpful, but I have to taper that comment by saying that I didn’t get to talk to an actual advisor. There are 2 doctor-advisors and I think a dental-advisor who come in 2 or 3 days a week for open walk in hours to advise pre-vet/med/dental/optometry kids.

For the times they aren’t in the office, they have undergraduates who are currently applying or who have applied to these types of professional schools. The kid I talked to, and this was only one kid, didn’t really seem to know what I was talking about when I was asking questions about the pre-rec classes for medical school, which let’s all admit here, is pretty key.

At that point, about halfway through last year I wasn’t sure if I wanted to apply to med school (It’s always been a sort of maybe for me) but now I’m considering the idea more and more, so I’m going to go back at the beginning of next year to make sure I’m on track.

So long story short, make sure you go in when the actual advisors are there, not when their assistants are. I can get back to you on them in a few months  Also, check out the pre-health advising website which has the UNC course numbers for all the pre-recs for all pre-healths.
