My S is a currently a senior, but has never taken a foreign language class. UNCSA requires 2 years. Has anybody had a similar situation and discovered a work around with the school to allow them to apply and get accepted?
Sorry, no, 2 years of foreign language is a common requirement for HS graduation, at least in our state.
As NYDreammom stated, 2 years foreign language is an extremely common HS graduation requirement. Many colleges require it for admittance as well, and I don’t know of any way to get that waived, unless the student has done an extensive study abroad (in a foreign language speaking country) during HS.
We live in a state that requires 2 years of foreign language as well, but I was curious to see how many states did. I found a comparison of the states’ grad requirements and it appears that as many as 19 states do not have a specific requirement for foreign language. If I was looking at the chart correctly, and my count is accurate, your S can’t be the only one in that position. I would definitely check in with admissions. Good luck!
In my D’s search of academic requirements she did come across some schools that said they require 2 years of foreign language but if it wasn’t taken in HS then it would be a required course (for 2 years) in college. I don’t remember which schools though.
Maybe follow up with admissions to see if that is an option.
