I live in North Carolina and I would like to stay in state, I’m thinking about UNC Wilmington or Appalachian State, does anybody have any advice on which to attend? I’ve toured both, I liked Wilmington’s campus/area SLIGHTLY better than App but App has the better reputation. I don’t really know what I want to study yet, maybe English or Journalism, definitely something in the humanities. Are there any people who have gone to either college and could give their opinions, giving pros and cons for each and then comparing them? I’d appreciate it.
App and UNCW are virtually the same level academics and reputation wise. Especially staying in-state, you really can’t go wrong at all with these two terrific universities. It’s all about which setting fits you: stunning coastal beaches or gorgeous mountains.
If you’re looking for English, UNCW has a great department for it. I would also recommend a Creative Writing minor to take advantage of the state’s only publishing lab.
UNCW Pros:
- Proximity to the beach (Wrightsville is only 10 mins away)
- Excellent size, not to small or big at 15,000 students total
- Superb up-and-coming university that is generally academically strong all-around
- Very chill, laid-back student body
- Great mid-major sports teams
- Tons of opportunities coming out of college no matter what your field is; UNCW is a respected university
Cons:
- no football team (I don’t personally care about that, but other students see it as a con)
- sorta lacks racial diversity
App State pros:
- only a little bigger than Wilmington
- in the Blue Ridge mountains
- Also a great up-and-coming university just like Wilmington
- Is situated in a college town
- has a football team
Cons:
- Boone is generally considered a rural area
- App has even less diversity than UNCW
