I am currently an undecided major right now and I am highly considering switching into Biology and going on the pre-med track.

I feel like I am so far behind everyone else though and I am wondering if I will be able to finish all of the pre-med requirements before the MCATs.

So far I have taken:

1 semester English
2 semesters Chemistry

I am currently taking:

1 semester English
1 semester Statistics
1 semester Biology

Would I be able to finish in time or should I take some classes over the summer? I am a second semester freshman.

Also, would you recommend taking that second semester of English?

It doesn’t look like you’re behind at all by current med school pre-reqs.* Just double up on your sciences next year by taking OChem and the second half of your Bio courses and you’ll be all caught up with your contemporaries.

*(Please note that the MCAT will be changing its content in Jan 2015, please consult with the health professions advisor at your school to see how this may affect you.)

It’s not a good idea to take med school pre-reqs in the summer. If you do want to take summer courses, take Calc 1 or a GE class.

A number of (but not all or even most) med schools require two semesters of writing credits. So taking another writing intensive class might be wise. You can take any course which fulfills the writing requirement for your school–it doesn’t have to be an English class. (D2 took her second semester of writing as part of a math class…go figure.)

BTW, you know you don’t have major in Bio to apply to med school. Any liberal art or science major is acceptable.

Anyone else? Thanks for the help by the way!

It is NOT advised taking med. school requirements over summer.
There is no requirment of taking them before MCAT.
However, classes that are helpful for MCAT are Orgo, Physics and upper Bio, like Genetics and Physiology. Well, cannot advise on Gen. Chem., since somehow that one was very easy in D’s school and she did not need to prep. this section for MCAT, she knew material.
Intense writing aka Honors English at college was complete waste of time and very time consuming at the same time. However, you must take it as it is required. So, basically bare with it, unless you enjoy reading novels, then you will love it for R&R.
You seem to be taking only one schience / semester. D. was taking at least 2 very hard classes and sometime one additional somewhat easier scince class / semester. You will need to take it slower in junior / senior year for MCAT prep / Med. School interviews. So, I would advise to challenge yourself a bit more in Freshman / Sophomore year.
Most pre-meds are taking MCAT after Junior year spring finals.
