Does going undecided in major affect my chances if getting in in any way...UN both reach and safety schools????

That is pretty difficult to answer. Generally, transition from one major to another is easy if both the majors are similar.

I am not sure with the numbers but there are colleges which consider the “undeclared” equally as the others and there are colleges which are somewhat harsh towards the undeclared.

So if you are unsure about which engineering major to choose, then it’s better to choose a major now and you can shift majors later in college.

But I am thinking of not going for for engineering…Is it still the same??

As far as I know while applying you should be able to narrow down to one major and most colleges allow you to change majors from a more selective program to a rather less selective program. But vice versa can and may only happen if you are able to maintain a high, 3.7+ GPA in the freshman year. Also some will require you to have finished certain required courses towards that major if you wish to transfer after the second year. So there is no harm in ticking one off in your applications.

What I know for sure at Stern, NYU, here one applies for a B.S. as a Business major. And within that there are 8 concentrations like Finance, Marketing, Mangement, Accounting, Acturial Science…And one is allowed to change concentrations a few times but advised to declare by the end of Sophomore year.

I am not familiar with Engineering Programs though. Better way would be to visit a college forum here on CC and check there.

Here’s what I read somewhere.
Undecided shouldn’t mean that you have absolutely completely no idea what you want to do in college. (How are you going to decide which college is best for you if you don’t have atleast a vague sketch of yourself in 2-4 years?) Undecided means that you’re toying between 2-3 majors and can’t decide on one. They don’t have to be all in Business or all in Engineering. You can be undecided between Physics and Dance! It just means you’re interested in both and can’t decide which one you’d like to pursue a career in.
So first up, don’t be completely lost. Introspect, explore, and research. You’ll definitely be able to narrow down your areas of interest to something like 2 or maximum 4.
Secondly, if your interests are polar like physics and dance, finance and german, or something like that, you’ll be best going with a couple of LACs. LACs encourage people who are undecided and have varied interests to make the best of both worlds. There’s always grad school for specialization.
If you CAN narrow yourself to majors WITHIN an area- say Engineering or within Business, just pick one and apply to colleges where you know you’ll be able to change within your sphere after you’ve tried them out.
Hope this helps!

Thanks a lot
