I am considering either Physics or a type of Engineering. I would probably want to take some classes is both and I would be able to decide which one I would prefer by the end of freshman year, approximately. A lot of schools I'm looking at want you to apply to a specific college. Physics is usually under Arts & Sciences, and then there is the college of Engineering. Should I just put 'undecided' or should I just pick Physics, or what? Is it very specific to the school?

Just put one down. You're not declaring your major, you're just telling them what you're interested in majoring in. It's not final. I put down math, but it might be history or physics or something else.

I think it's more specific to the school than that, especially when there are separate colleges. While it is possible to transfer from one college to another, I think that the engineering program is often difficult to transfer into simply because it is so rigorous. You may want to consider initially declaring as an engineering major and switching out if it doesn't suit you, as that seems like the easier direction to switch.

That's what I was thinking about. Anyone else have any experience with this issue?

At most schools I know of, it's much harder to transfer into engineering than out of it. I'd put an engineering major if I were you.

I have heard similar things about engineering--always easier to switch out of than into...
