So I was just wondering whether putting down undecided on an application has any bearing as to whether the college accepts you or not. For example, if send an application with an undecided major and another student with about the same grades as me sends an application with an engineering major, would the engineering student get accepted over me?

Every school is a little different so it’s hard to know exactly how it works. Sometimes you’re considered in a giant pool of students regardless of your major, and sometimes you’re considered against others within a group of majors (very common when the school is divided up into separate sections, ex. School of Business, School of Engineering, etc), and sometimes within your specific major.

It’s not going to hurt you to enter as “undecided.” But if you have a strong profile for a particular major, applying for that major could give you a slight advantage. For example, if you received multiple awards for robotics contests, it might be viewed as a very strong accomplishment as an engineering applicant, but just an good/interesting accomplishment for an undecided student.

Ultimately it doesn’t matter too much and you just need to pick your major honestly, whether that be agriculture or undecided.
