undecided major vs. declared major?

Which will up my chances of acceptance? I figure that if i choose undecided major on my application that it will look better then a declared major, because each major has X amount of slots to fill which limits chances of getting in. does this sound right? thanx.

All things that I have read point to declaring interest in a major not significantly impacting your chances at acceptance. Unless you're applying to MIT and listing intended major as Studio Art (or something along those lines), colleges will simply use that information as appropriate, but not as a means of selection.

Also, the X amount of slots theory has never made much sense to me -- Unless a college has specific schools that you apply to (where you apply directly to a certain program, i.e. graphic design or engineering), then they have no idea what the yield may be. Even if it is supposed that there are 500 biology slots, of the total number of freshmen admitted, it's not as if the top 500 students interested in biology will matriculate at that particular institution.

Ditto to what scuba said. Another thing; colleges often want to see that you have a particular interest in something. If your resume seems to show that you like math (you're in math club, have won math competitions, etc) it might be in your best interests to say that you want to major in math. Undecided may be the way to go if you really have no idea at all what you are vaguely interested in. Depending on the school, you don't want to limit yourself to only one subject that you might be interested (i.e. only pre-med). If you can, apply to a general interdisciplinary major like global studies that encompasses many different disciplines.
