I'm not sure yet what I want to do in the future and as I'm applying now, I'm trying to find good colleges that let you go in as an undecided major. Most schools I'm looking at seems to require that you apply to one of their specific schools immediately in the application process But I definitely need more time and experience before choosing. What would be some better colleges/universities that let you go in undecided? Thanks!

Home State? GPA, SAT/ACT and EC’s would help.

Unweighted gpa: 4.0 weighted gpa: 4.9
Rank: 1/700

ACT: 31 freshman year, I’ll probably retake it soon.
SAT: 2230

SAT II Math 2: 800
SAT II US History: 730
SAT II Physics: 690

AP Physics B: 5
AP Psych: 5
AP US History: 5
AP European History: 5
(I know I haven’t taken many AP exams, but the way class scheduling works at my school it’s almost impossible to have done more by this point)

Senior Schedule:
-AP Physics C
-AP Chem
-AP Lit
-AP Macroecon
-AP Calc AB
(I’m considering adding an online AP Stats course)

-I’ve played on the school tennis team all four years, was captain of JV my junior year and got the Coach’s Award, and am on varsity my senior year
-President of school’s academic decathlon team (and have a few awards from the county level)
-Officer for Red Cross Club
-Secretary for CSF
-in NHS
-in Spanish honor Society

-I’ve done lots of tutoring both for high schoolers and middle schoolers
-Volunteer at local library
-other community service here and there, total around 200 hours

I’m fairly confident my letters of rec will be good

Also:
-I’m an Asian (Chinese) female
-I moved from Wisconsin to California before my sophomore year
-My school offers IB but I opted not to take it as it isn’t a very established program at my school and I thought it wasn’t worth it.

How much can you and your family afford and do you want to stay in California?

Most LACs don’t require a major before sophomore year. Unfortunately for California schools, if you don’t declare when you are admitted, you may have a tough time getting certain majors. Any idea at all what you want to study? At least in general like Humanities, Social Sciences, Sciences, Engineering, Business, etc.

You have very competitive stats. If you want to stay in California, all the UC’s allow you to pick Undeclared. For other schools that do not offer Undeclared, you can pick a general major and change later unless it is impacted. Most college students change their major 2-3 times during their college career. Just remember that the more competitive the major, the more difficulty you may have transferring into that major.

Even some universities that require you to apply to specific colleges will have one college in which you can be undecided. Many other colleges simply ask for your intended major or majors of interest. I found very few schools that REQUIRED me to declare a major beforehand.

Money isn’t a big problem and location doesn’t matter. I just really don’t want to make the mistake of going into a field I end up hating, especially since I feel like I lack the experience to make an informed, confident decision right now. I want to be able to go to a college and for at least the first year or so explore the paths open to me.

For programs such as engineering, business, nursing etc. you do need to start in the area quickly if you want to graduate on time because the classes are sequential in nature. Sometimes these schools have different admissions standards. You don’t need to declare a major in these cases, but you do need to apply to a specific school if you want a specialized area.

That said 1) you can apply undecided within the liberal arts school and have a huge range of choices or 2) you can apply to a specialized program if you think you want it and if it doesn’t work you can generally switch into a liberal arts program.
