Would like some feedback please! My daughter just realized she is swaying towards Undecided Engineering. She has narrowed it down to Penn State University Park (accepted Undecided), University of Delaware (accepted for Animal Sciences - her 2nd choice) and really liked Rensselaer (waitlisted for undecided Engineering ). How easy is it to make Penn State’s and UDel’s Engineering school if going in undecided or changing your major? What is your social life at Rensselaer and do you have any regrets? (the tuition is ridiculous). If not RPI if she does make it, Penn State or UDel? She did prefer a smaller school.
Not really sure as far as programs are concerned but is money a factor?
Private school without a merit scholarship will be challenging. UDel, Umass gave her money. Penn State did not but if she chooses to go there it will be ok
Question… by saying “undecided” do you mean she was admitted into the engineering programs as an undecided engineering major or was she not accepted at all to engineering and a basic “undeclared or university studies student?”
This is what we are working with…Must make a choice by May 1st and send in deposit.
First Choice Engineering, 2nd Choice Animal Sciences (pre-vet studies)
If you notice below, all waitlists are in Engineering.
Major- Undecided Engineering - Waitlisted to RPI (apparently about 3% chance from what I understand getting off that list :(Visited on Saturday, loved it.)
Major- Undeclared - Penn State- Admitted (Visited twice, a little too big but thinking about it.)
Major-Engineering - Binghamton Upstate NY-Waitlisted
Major-Animal Sciences- Udel-Admitted+Got Merit Scholarship (Liked it, visiting again this weekend)
Major-Animal Sciences-UMass-Admitted+Got Merit Scholarship (visiting it next week)
Major-Biology-Purdue-Admitted (Visited last week, disliked it.)
Major-Engineering- NYU Poly- Waitlisted
If you are not successful getting into an aceptable Engineering Program and decide to enter a college in another major (or undeclared), and your intent remains to try and transfer subsequently into the engineering program, you probably need to look at your freshman course makeup so that the non-engineering courses you take would be courses also required by the engineering program at the school. If not then you may find yourself in the position of having to take make-up courses that might force you to extend your college time. At UD engineering is considered a restricted major due to limited number of positions available. If you go to the UD Registrars website the courses required to transfer into the various engineering majors are identified. I suspect many of the non-engineering courses required would also be part of the initial freshman course requirements for an Animal Science/Pre-Vet major (chem, calc etc). Transferring into the engineering major from another major at both PSU and UD would be challenging but is doable but it will take a lot of hard work and planning from day 1 of college. Unfortunately at both schools you also would be competing with engineering undeclared majors for the specific type of engineering major you would want to enter.
I would like to add that the Animal Science/Pre-Vet Program at UD is excellent and is well thought of by Vet Schools. One of our D’s best friends from when she was at UD graduated in this major and last year graduated from the DVM Program at the Univ. of Pennsylvania. Good luck to you at whatever college you choose to attend,
Great info!! Thank you. Very helpful
