Undecided

if I'm really undecided about what I want to do with my life, which college at CMU should I look into?

CMU really is best for those who have decided upon some direction. While I love lots of things about CMU, I don't think it's the best place if you are totally undecided and want to sample different things. For one thing, you need to apply to a specific school and major and while you can change your major, you may benefit more from a school that doesn't require you to declare your major until sophomore or junior year.

alright, thanks a lot

if possible, could someone rank the colleges at CMU from best (in terms of reputation, qualifications of students attending)? thanks

I agree with lkf725.

CMU's arts programs are very well known, especially the theatre/musical theatre program. The School of Computer Science and Tepper School of Business are most competitive for admission, and the Carnegie Institute of Technology (engineering) is also a top-10 program. Humanities and Social Sciences and the Mellon College of Science also have great programs, including scholars classes with interdisciplinary focuses. The (cognitive) psychology and economics programs are particularly well known. I think that MCS offers many more discrete math classes than most universities, because of the large presence of SCS.

Edit: Since you seem to be undecided, I would suggest looking at Rice University. It has many strengths similar to CMU, and the only binding decision on admittance is whether or not you're in the music school. Houston is a great city - don't sterotype it because it's in Texas.
