my D applied to AU for internationals studies… but now she doesn’t know anymore( she just turns 17!! what do you know at 17?) anyways do you know if it’ll be possible to change her mind like switching to communication or journalism?

It’s no big deal to switch majors. Just encourage her to take lots of gen eds at first, so she can explore new subjects and get the non major specific requirements out of the way.

Switching majors is very easy. Students at most schools are not even required to declare until they are a second semester sophomore. Just take gen-eds before delving into major requirements.

^ but they already assigned her with a major: International Studies… does she need to commit to IS already??

It is true that your D does not have to commit early to a particular major and a review of the curriculum will show that many of the courses that she will choose will meet requirements for more than one major. For example languages, political science, and IR courses seem to overlap. That is great since she will not be boxed in and can find what truly interests her. She can keep her options open. Also, my S has loved the small class sizes at AU. He never really thought about class size before attending but now is grateful that classes are small and profs actually know you and are so approachable.

Helpermom:^ thank you for your quick answer!! i tried to reply to you by PM but my box was full, so i wrote the message back and i couldn’t send it… i finally erased all my messages and you were gone too! Glad you came back here today!!! yes, i am worried thinking that maybe she can’t change her mind concerning her major. i can’t tell she is not so sure about IS!

She is assigned to a “school” for counseling/advising purposes, which starts virtually the day she gets there. It is very easy to switch after the first term, and if she takes mostly gen eds the first term, they will be same in both schools.

If you come in with enough gen ed credits, you can actually major in both schools. (It isn’t easy, but doable). Mine is majoring in Business with an accounting specialization, and minoring at SIS (economic development).

I heard of someone who changed his major to get a free t-shirt. It’s as easy as doing a little planning, and getting a few signatures.

Your daughter will probably change her major – not because she’s unsure, but because most people do!
