Are you already at NYU or are you applying? Because if you’re applying I’d suggest applying to Gallatin, you could build a major around both and decide after you graduation which to pursue.

Theoretically, you CAN have a non-science major and still apply to medical school. As long as you use your electives to fulfill the science requirements, you are eligible.

HOWEVER, at NYU, Journalism is a REQUIRED double-major. You are forced to double-major within CAS, in order to hone a specific journalistic focus. So this would not be possible at NYU. Journalism + double major + science would not work.

You could still study English, take science classes, and then reevaluate around spring of your sophomore year and see how you feel about medicine. Some people find that science at the college level is not for them, and then they just keep on taking classes in the non-science major. It should give you enough time to make an informed and rational decision.

Major in english and take pre-med classes. There’s a girl at emory who was in the music department. Major in Music and did pre-med classes. Will now be entering med school this coming year after pursuing something she loved in college, but still able to make a career through pre-med.

You don’t need to declare a major until the end of sophomore year, so there’s no rush to decide right now. (I’m assuming you’re not yet a sophomore?) I would suggest getting as many of your required classes out of the way as soon as possible. That way, you’ll be able to dive into your major as soon as you figure it out.

Also, don’t stress out about not knowing what you want to do! It’s totally normal and MANY college students switch their major at least once. (I have a friend who just graduated NYU and actually switched schools several times - CAS to Tisch to Steinhardt and back to CAS again.) For now, just study what interests you; your ultimate path will eventually emerge. :)

When you say “medical direction”, what do you mean specifically? If you mean pre-med, then of course you can major in whatever you want. I know CAS requires Journalism students to double major as well.

If you meant something like Nursing or Physical Therapy, then of course you would have to go into those programs directly. It’s not hard to switch between NYU schools within the first 2 years of college. Once you hit Junior year I’m not sure how it works.

okay, thank you! yeah im still in highschool actually, so there is time for me to decide. it’s just hard to focus in two completely different areas and give the same amount of effort for each.
