I believe this is the first year for UE at UIUC, so this may be hard to judge, but does anyone know how difficult it will be to get into the exact major you want after your freshman year? I can't find any real information on the program online. I am thinking I want to do CS, but figured that if I spent my freshman year as an undeclared, I may have a change of heart after learning more about all the different disciplines. Most of the other schools I am applying to do not even make you select a major until your second year, and I do not know why UIUC doesn't use this approach.

So basically, should I just pick CS from the get-go, and not risk the chance of being rejected from it after my freshman year?

If you have something in mind as intended major, you should choose that. If you are a qualified candidate but not accepted by that program, they may put you on the second choice. Some students would prefer applying directly to a major. Imagine if a student apply to certain school specifically for an intended program but ended up not accepted a year later. Would it be better for him/her without the uncertainty in the freshmen year? Anyway, you may change major after freshmen if you did find out you have interest in something else.

If you get into the Engineering program that you think you might be interested in, and you decide that was the right choice, no transfer is necessary, and certainty is a good thing when deciding which college to attend. As a second choice, you can select Engineering Undecided, if you’d like. See the following post from Drusba, the preeminent poster on the UIUC Forum:

Sorry Bill was looking for the Drusba post link and you snuck in.

My son is not sure what engineering major he should select so he applied, and was accepted to First Year Engineering: Undeclared Engineering (UE). Does anyone know the procedure for a UE student to select a major? There doesn’t seem to be any information on the UIUC website regarding this scenario.
