Hi, i'm planning on going to ucla or ucsd and haven't decided on a major yet... I am thinking about going in undecided and picking a major later. What does the undeclared major actually do? and is it a good idea for me to go in undeclared, or should I try to pick a major soon?

The undeclared option is great to explore many different classes to see what interests you. Many people use this option when they first enroll in college because they have no clue on what to major in. Usually your classes will be all of the classes everyone has to take when they are a freshman (English, Math, etc) plus a few electives in what subects might interest you.

How do you choose courses as an undeclared major? My school has GE requirements and several writing/seminar requirements but I feel odd taking a bunch of GEs for another quarter.

I don't know why, but some college rep told me to put down what I was interested in when I applied, and then change it once I got it, because it would make me seem more focused and ready for college and less like some unsure high school kid who is lost.

But what if you had a hard time switching, or something else went wrong? you'd be stuck.

I'd just go undeclared.
