Under 3.6 UW GPA and applying to top schools?

I saw a thread in for parents in this situation, so I wondered what you guys think. Good idea or not? I myself fit in this category, but I have good scores so I don't know.

What schools take scores into account more? I personally believe in the SAT and I think it does measure "smartness" pretty accurately. I mean, what good is a 4.0 with a 1800 SAT score?

At top schools, it’s nearly impossible to make up for a below 3.6 GPA by a high SAT score, for the same reason it’s nearly impossible to make up for anything significantly below the average. There will be many applicants who got your same test score AND a high GPA, and they are going to be admitted over you.

Why start this thread here? The one on the parent’s board has great, comprehensive info.

I’m applying to some top schools with a 3.45 GPA and good test scores, but not spectacular or anything. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it. As long as you don’t set your expectations higher than reaity, that is.
