Under-Qualified NYU 2015 Applicants

Decisions are almost here!
I’m very interested in seeing all types of applicants, no matter how high or how low. There are obviously students who NYU takes chances on, and I’m excited to see such “success stories”

Keep in mind there is no judgement or jeering welcome here. Academics don’t have to necessarily indicate intelligence.

So, here is an “average” accepted applicant at NYU:
Rank in High School Graduating Class of Most Freshmen: Top 10%
“Typical Unweighted GPA of Most Freshmen”: 3.5+
SAT Critical Reading Score Range (middle 50%): 610 - 710
SAT Math Score Range (middle 50%): 630 - 740
SAT Writing Score Range (middle 50%): 640-730
ACT Score Range (middle 50%): 28 - 32

Post your stats:
Applied to: Kanbar Institute: Tisch School of the Arts (Film)
UW GPA: 3.2
W GPA: 3.5
AP Courses: 6 total throughout high school career. Lowest grade is C in AP Statistics.
AP Exams: APLANG (4) APHG (4) APWH (4)
SAT: 1640 (CR: 540, M: 540, W: 560)

Strengths: Essays, recommendation and portfolio
Hooks: URM, First-Gen, Low Income Family

Why NYU?: I feel that compared to most other schools, NYU is somewhere I can develop artistically which is something very important to me. Also, according to my intended major, I think the best place to learn and grow is definitely in the city.
Any backup schools?: Indiana University, Columbia College Chicago

Good luck to everyone!

@SoulOverBody‌ If it helps, a friend of mine got into Tisch last year with a lower SAT score, lower rank, and basically all your hooks too. (Of it even matters, she was Hispanic.)

@collegeplease123 Wow that’s impressive! It certainly does help, but then again I am trying not to get my hopes up too much. However, thanks for sharing, best of luck to her!

@SoulOverBody‌ She got in through the RD round last year, not this year! I should also mention that I’m in the same situation, in terms of FA and housing change whatever… Certainly hoping it is meaningless!!

@collegeplease123 Right! Initially I was really excited to see the FA change but looking at other forums many brought up the Albert Maintenance Check which probably was to eliminate the “glitch”. Interesting how many who had the change claimed it reverted back after the check. Then all this housing speculation pops up and I’m like NOOO MORE!! Hahaha definitely exciting nonetheless

Now, I feel obligated to post my stats:

Applied to: CAS (Economics)
UW GPA:3.4
W GPA: 4.0
AP Courses: 4, 4’s on all exams
SAT: 2020

Strengths: Hmm… I’m pretty much the most boring person in the universe, so I think the Admissions Committee fell asleep while reading my essay! I have 0 strength.

Hooks: Nothing here either. I’m pretty boring.

Why NYU?: Well the proximity to Wall Street, and the hub of the international market NYU has access to. From internships to etc. I also want to get into NYU, because they have an amazing Food Club.

Any backup schools: SUNY Binghamton, UGA.

Let me know what you think! And I seriously hope to meet you beautiful people!

Applied to: CAS (biology)
UW GPA: 3.3
WGPA: 3.6
7 APs, 4s and 5s
ACT: 34

strengths: essays, ACT

hooks: difficult life that I wrote about it explain GPA, low income

why NYU: the city!!! And good research/academics

Accepted to Case Western:)

@collegeplease123 Best of luck to you! And don’t underestimate yourself duuuude. Whatever the decision is, I know we will go on to do great stuff as long as we work hard towards it. If I don’t get accepted, I will definitely look to transfer. NYU is the ultimate goal

@SoulOverBody‌ I thought the ultimate goal was becoming the president of the U.S.? Was my whole life a lie…?

@tlf123098 Best of luck to you! Did you get any FA from Case Western?

bump

Applied to: Stern and CAS (Computer Science)
UW GPA: 3.2
WGPA: 5.0
9 AP’s
ACT: 27
SAT: 1840

strengths: essays, EC’s

hooks: Horrendous Freshman/Sophmore year but major upward trend

why NYU: Networking is second to none and…well it’s NYU haha

Accepted to Hofstra, St. John’s, and Fordham

@SoulOverBody‌ yes! I got FA plus a merit scholarship for 22k/year :slight_smile:

Applied to: Kanbar Institute: Tisch School of the Arts (Film) too! (EDII)
UW GPA: 9.6./12
W GPA: N/A
AP Courses: English (didn’t complete though), Art, Ceramics, Psychology
AP Exams: Ceramics - 4 (as if that even mattered haha. I was extremely unmotivated back then)
ACT: 24 (It would’ve been a 28 if I wasn’t so terrible at math)

Strengths: Essays, recommendation
Hooks: Navy Veteran, 5+ years of experience in film production, Black and Native American, Read/Speak Arabic, I’ve traveled to 9 different countries and I currently live in Bahrain?

Why NYU?: I’ve loved NYC since I was 7 and I’ve wanted to be involved in film since I was 12. I spent about a year and a half after high school living in California and I felt like the East coast would be a much better place for me to grow. Also, because I DID NOT think I could get in to such an amazing school and everyone told me I should try anyway haha. Glad I did!

Any backup schools?: School of Visual Arts New York, University of Texas in Austin

I’m putting my stats up here because I really hope that anyone who wants to apply won’t be afraid to even if their stats don’t match “the typical NYU student’s”! Not only did I get into Tisch but I also received a 23K scholarship from the school on top of the 28K I get from my GI Bill! Good luck everyone!

@tjclue04 I know this is very unlikely, buy do you know your FA status?

@Awakening15 whoa sounds like you’ve had quite an exciting journey!! And thanks so much for sharing, I hope others have the same experience

Applied to: Tisch (Recorded Music)
UW GPA: 3.5
WGPA: 3.7
6 AP’s, 5 Honors
SAT: 2050

Strengths: EC’s, essays

Weaknesses: I’m mostly a B student and I’m not sure if that’s very NYU-worthy… plus the ReMu program is so selective, and I’m not sure how my portfolio stacked up

why NYU: I love everything about the ReMu program, plus the industry connections in the school/city are endless

Accepted: Drexel (will most likely attend if NYU’s a no), Pace, Eugene Lang, New Haven
Waitlisted at Northeastern

@SoulOverBody‌ I don’t want to talk about it :frowning: haha

no change

I’m so nervous for decisions!

Applied to CAS
UW GPA: ~3.5, W: ~3.8 (counting first semester senior year)
SAT: 2250
I’ll have taken ~10 APs by the end of this year, AP Scholar with Distinction
ECs: some political and literary stuff, some leadership positions
Essays: I rate them pretty highly, hopefully the adcoms think the same

I love NYU and NYC, but I’d need quite a bit of financial aid, and I’ve heard NYU doesn’t give much :stuck_out_tongue: I’ve had a string of waitlists/rejections this week, and I need some good news though. I’ve been accepted to UCLA, so I’m planning to go there if nothing works out. Good luck to everyone!

Applied to: Stern (yikes  …ahahahaha)
UW GPA: 3.5
W GPA: 3.8
– GPA is semi-acceptable, but the problem is that I’ve had 4 C’s and 2 D’s in some Honors/AP courses (I think they pretty much killed my chances at any school) … Senior year first semester I had a 4.4/4.6 though, so I hope they notice my significant growth/improvement //HOPING//.
AP Courses: 8 total (5 Junior, 3 Senior)
AP Exams: AP CALC AB (5), AP Chinese (5), APUSH (4), APES (4), AP English Lang/Comp(4)
SAT: 2280 (CR: 680, M: 800, W: 800)

Strengths: SAT, Essays, Recommendation, Commended Student (PSAT/NMSQT close to semi-finalist) AP Scholar with Distinction (though many people have the latter two ahahaha…)
Hooks: First-Gen, Low Income Family

Backup schools: [didn’t apply to many … i regret :/] UC Riverside, Cal State Northridge

Good Luck to all  !!
