Under the character limit but SIGNIFICANTLY over the word limit?

I was just re-reading over my essays for Princeton and was about to hit submit, but found out they had word limits attached as well as character limits.

The character limit was 5,000 characters and I came in at about 4500, but the word limit was 500 and I came in around 780. The character limit is very generous, because there are few 100 character words out there and there would be no way to use them all in your essay.

Which one is a bigger deal? Which one should I follow?

780 is a lot. Read through the essay one more time and I am sure you will find there things that can be crossed out. It will also make the essay easier to read. Mine is 580 though :D
