Under the radar and underrated

Carnegie Mellon

Emory

Johns Hopkins

Don't you think?

If anything, I think Emory is pretty overrated thanks to their obssession with USNWR rankings. At least that’s the sense I’ve gathered on CC.

And I think a lot of people know Hopkins. But I do agree with Carnegie.

People who matter (ie: employers, academics) will know these schools. The average person might not, but honestly who cares what they think? You

Hopkins’ BME program is underrated, imo.

I agree with CMU. Very very good school. Not so much the other two.

CMU is definitely underrated.
Emory is less so, if you pay attention to the rankings.
JHU is in no way underrated, at least not where I live.

Rice beats alllll three of those pretty handily in the “underrated” department. I came from Texas, for goodness’ sake, and people around here STILL didn’t know it well enough or give it enough credit…

CMU yep… underrated~

I concur. Underrated.

Pomona, Harvey Mudd, Reed, Carnegie Mellon, University of Washington

Agree except for Emory. I would add rice.

My bias aside, I believe that, out of the top 20 universities in America, Rice is the most underrated. When I was visiting colleges after I was admitted, I viewed Rice as a “hidden gem.” No one from my school has went to Rice since 1999 although there is at least one student from my high school that go to similar caliber schools every single year. These schools include Duke, Northwestern, WashU, Emory, and Vanderbilt. The “hidden gem” aspect of Rice was one of the main reasons why I chose it over similar caliber schools.

I do agree with the OP that Emory is underrated, but it depends on what programs you are talking about. Personally, I feel the pre-med program is overrated and maybe the business program as well. However, I heard the liberal arts majors, such as religion, English, and poli sci, are very strong at Emory. In the top 20 list, I feel that only Rice, Emory, and maybe Vanderbilt have the least name recognition and are the most underrated on the top 20 list.

Here are other schools that are underrated in my opinion: Carnegie Mellon, Tufts, Davidson, and Wake Forest.

I agree with Reed and Carnegie Mellon, but I think Emory is overrated, and JHU is just about right.

Wesleyan is also kind of underrated.

Johns Hopkins doesn’t really seem under the radar. In contrast, it seems very well known.

On a side note: I find it rather funny that Emory often shows up on lists for schools someone believes to be overrated and on lists for schools someone believes to be underrated.

From my perspective:

JHU - rated just fine

CMU (in the eyes of the average joe) - underrated
CMU (rankings-wise) - rated just fine

Emory (in the eyes of the average joe) - underrated
Emory (rankings-wise) - slightly overrated

Rice (in the eyes of the average joe) - underrated
Rice (rankings-wise) - slightly underrated

UT and A&M are slightly overrated in Texas, but underrated everywhere else. Trinity University is pretty underrated in Texas.

I don’t really consider Rice underrated in Texas. The kids who can’t get in barely know anything about the school, whereas the kids who can get in know a lot about the school and several even apply there. If UT weren’t cheaper and in a nicer town, I think a few more kids from my school would’ve chosen Rice over UT Honors.

I agree, mvmanno.
