Underachievers: 3.3 GPA or less, 2000+ SATS

for anyone that falls in this range please comment! i'm applying to Babson, Bentley, Binghamton, Brandeis, Carnegie Mellon, GW, Lehigh, Michigan, NYU, Syracuse, Wash U. in St. Louis, and William & Mary. How about the rest of you underachievers?

heya… I graduated from high school in '09, but yeah, that was the position I was in. 3.17 unweighted GPA (i did a year abroad in a German gymnasium, which i guess is a mitigating factor, but whatever,) and a 2050 SAT (750CR/670M/630W.) I took it once, wasn’t all that happy with it, but I didn’t have time to do it again - I got back from Germany mid-July, and didn’t think I’d do well on a standardized test when I’d been living abroad for a year, so I waited to take it and did some math tutoring stuff. I had to take a couple subject tests in October - I still thought I was applying to Cornell at this point - and a December re-take would have been too late for some of the places I was applying to.

I toured at Hampshire, Emerson, Emmanuel, Boston University, UMass Boston, and St. John’s College, and a couple of the schools I ended up applying to. My list was originally like 30 schools long, but that got cut down pretty good.

I applied at Hendrix College, Tulane, UChicago, UWisconsin, UWashington, and Goucher College.

Waitlisted from Tulane (like a dumbass, applied on the deadline to a rolling admissions school -_- ) and I guess I never really finished the UWisconsin app - the admissions office sent me back a form after I applied, full of essays that I’d have to do. I’d already gotten into UWashington and given the horrendous aid I was getting as an out-of-state student (I’m from Western Massachusetts,) I figured the story wouldn’t be any different at Wisconsin.

I got in everywhere else. It came down to Hendrix and UChicago. In hindsight, there are tons of other schools I should have taken a better look at, but hey… I’m doing it now, so I guess I got there eventually. XD

I really liked the vibe and the people at Hendrix, but felt I’d coast through four years there, and I didn’t want that. but I liked it, and I figured there was no way I’d get into Chicago anyways.

shocker!!! got into Chicago. I didn’t actually like UC all that much when I visited on an admitted students’ day, but rationalized it as being “the right choice,” and that I’d be better off as a person if I got through four years at chicago. so I fell back into old habits and did what might be better in the long run instead of doing what would make me happy. I found I couple of crappy reasons to support the Chicago-ness (Bar Night and the presence of an active safe/sane/consentual group on campus,) and on i went.

I got to Chicago with a massive chip on my shoulder - I’d gotten what amounted to a full ride to one of the best schools in the world, I didn’t think I deserved it, and I thought every day about whether or not I was even ready for college, let alone UC. Long story short(er,) I essentially flunked out; I’m currently on what they call a mandatory leave of absence until at least next spring, and I probably can’t afford to go back anyways.

So here we are. =) Planning on going to massage therapy school next summer or fall, and going back to some college, somewhere, in Fall 2013.

I think there’s a thread in the Parents Forum that you might want to look at.

Is Binghamton your financial safety school (schools that you know you’ll get accepted to **and **you KNOW you can afford to attend)? Do you have any others?

Those of you with B to B+ averages, be sure to apply to a couple financial safety schools so that you’re assured to have a choice in the spring.

yeah u hit that right on the head. its my perfect financial safety and the one i may end up at since all my other schools are mostly expensive privates with no guarantee of financial aid

Good point about FA at your schools…Mich, NYU, and some others would not be great for FA.

The good thing is that you like Bing! But, you might want to add another financial safety just in case you change your mind about Bing or you just want to have a choice. If 3.3 is your unweighted GPA and you have a higher weighted GPA, then you may have more choices. :)

There’s something psychologically beneficial about feeling like you had a choice! :)

going to umass boston would have cost me more than uchicago did.

just saying.

and wash u says they meet need.

*going to umass boston would have cost me more than uchicago did.

and wash u says they meet need.
*

yes, if your EFC is low enough, then that is true for UChicago.

And, yes, WashU meets determined need.

But, the school decides what your need is, and if your “need” is greater than what the school says it is, that’s a problem Many kids have high EFCs that their families can’t pay.

No 2000+ criteria…

Wait…

Was the adcom at Uof C blind or not? you have a gpa 3.17 and sat 2000ish and got a FULL RIDE at Chicago? There are ONLY 30 full rides in Chicago and why they will give that money to YOU? They must be short of applicant that year for some reason. This story does not add up…

My GPA is a bit high for your specifications (3.5 and 2260) but I think I still fit into the underachiever category. I’m applying to Florida (first choice), Texas, Clemson, Alabama, Penn State, and possibly Georgia and Auburn. I’m also thinking about Michigan and Wisconsin but probably won’t end up applying.

yeah my gpa is a 3.16 unweighted but 3.94 weighted (2190 superscored sats). anyway, i know about those threads but none of them have the high sat requirement (that i know of) so i felt making this one!

regina, im not saying those aren’t good schools but since ur gpa isnt that bad unweighted and ur sat scores are excellent, u should think about applying to UChicago yourself or Rice and Emory (top southern schools). not sure about your extracurriculars and stuff but ur scores could be good enough to get in to emory and rice even if you want to consider them as reach schools, why not?

what AMOUNTED to a full ride - chicago calls it an odyssey scholarship. as in, “oh, you got in, and your family makes less than $x, so here you go.” i’m as shocked as the next person that i got in to begin with, but my essays and recs were really good.

Regina (post#14), can you afford all those OOS schools?

No, you did not have a full ride MERIT scholarship, you’ve got a needed base scholarship. There is a big difference. The full ride scholarship I was thinking about is a grant to the 30 top achievers. The need base scholarship is a mixture of Fedral grant and subsidized loans, it will not cover all the expenses.

I had a 2010 SAT and a 34 ACT but had a GPA of 3.06. I was ranked 140th out of 280 students in my high school class.

Applying for the engineering programs, I was accepted at Virginia Tech, Clemson, Purdue, Northeastern, UMass-Amherst, Pittsburgh and was rejected (both early action and regular decision) at NC State.

I received a $15,000 scholarship at Northeastern but chose to attend Clemson.

"Regina (post#14), can you afford all those OOS schools? "

I can afford full tuition if necessary, but will most likely have in-state tuition at Florida (should I be accepted) and a full tuition scholarship to Alabama.

“regina, im not saying those aren’t good schools but since ur gpa isnt that bad unweighted and ur sat scores are excellent, u should think about applying to UChicago yourself or Rice and Emory (top southern schools). not sure about your extracurriculars and stuff but ur scores could be good enough to get in to emory and rice even if you want to consider them as reach schools, why not?”

Honestly, I’ve never even considered applying to top private schools. I really want to go to a large school with great sports, school spirit, etc. – I considered UVA and UNC as reaches, but eventually they got knocked off my list. For privates, I had considered BC and USC, but those also left a while ago. I haven’t even taken the SAT IIs and don’t plan on it at this point. As much as I would love to apply to top schools just to see if I could get in, it wouldn’t be worth the effort of SAT IIs and essays and extra apps when I know those aren’t the types of places where I would genuinely want to spend four years. I really do appreciate you saying this, though – it’s a confidence boost to hear someone say that they think I might be able to get into a great school.
