My D is making her final decision on where to attend in the fall. She has narrowed down her choice to San Diego State and University of San Diego. The cost difference is about 15,000 per year in her case. I worry she will short change herself by worring too much about the cost difference and not concentrating on the quality of the education. Any info or suggestions she can use to help her decide? Thanks.

Both schools are quite different in terms of size, private vs public etc. but for business school, to me SDSU wins hands down. SDSU students are heavily recruited in so cal (especially when there were jobs to be had:(, their accounting program and international bus programs ar tops as are many other bus programs. Hubby went to SDSU and has been bery successful (as well as many of our friends and we aren’t from SD. D goes there now in the Libeal Studies program and loves it. Good luck.

Will the cost difference be covered by parent’s or will it be someone’s debt? Her debt or yours?

SDSU is a huge school with over taxed resources and the CSU’s are a mess with budget issues. There’s a lot to be said for a smaller school without the hassles. But if this means over $60K of debt for your DD, it’s not worth it.

Does SDSU really have a better business program than USD? Is it the general perception in southern California?

I was always told that USD’s b-school was one of their best departments and their grads get very good jobs in Southern California. But I guess if it is the best college in the University, doesn’t mean it is better than another U’s b-school. Though USD generally has a better rep than SDSU.

Bumping to see what kind of response I can get.

I’m interested in this too.

In business rankings for undergraduate business, USD was ranked 29th. Which was the third highest undergraduate business ranking in CA under Berkeley and USC. I thought that was quite impressive.

I didn’t see SDSU on the list…

Another one that was quite high in So Cal was Chapman.

I’d like some more advice too.

How is SDSU’s program?

I don’t think SDSU is seen as better. Just way bigger so get lots of recruiters seeking to fill large numbers of rank and file positions.

I think USD has a good network in Socal you would be hard pressed to find at a CSU.
