Can someone comment on the pros and cons of the U of Minnesota undergraduate business school. We will be paying OOS tuition. My D is looking into various programs in the Midwest. She is thinking of being a marketing major but that is not set in stone.

My brother went to Carlson with a scholarship, majoring in Management Information Systems. He got a work study for the U as a student web developer, and eventually got an internship at General Mill’s, and is now hired there as a Programmer Analyst, making quite a bit of money for fresh out of college and in a nice apartment. So yeah, I’d say he’s a lot better off than over half the students who graduate. Not really sure of the cons, the business school was nothing but great for him. People aren’t exaggerating when they say that IT careers make bank.

Absolutely 0 cons.

Any other comments would be appreciated!

In my opinion, at Carlson, Marketing is not as strong as other majors. I tell that from the Business Week rankings by specialty, on which Marketing at Carlson is #105, therefore not as famous a major. Since she’s not sure about her major yet, maybe economics/finance/accounting could be better bets? Those have much higher ranks. (#15-#17-#29)
However, Carlson is overall a highly-ranked school. Having your D go there won’t be a wrong choice imho.

I would be very hesitant to choose your major based on BusinessWeek rankings.

My neighbor teaches marketing at Carlson. I’ll have to ask about this next time I see him. I know that in general he feels that Carlson is very solid and competitive.

Mkting jobs tend to pay less to start. UM has a decent placement report. It does not tell how many and where they are placed by major.
