Hey everyone! I was just wondering if anyone had any experience or knowledge of the undergrad business school at Tulane. I'm deciding between southern Methodist university in Dallas and Tulane. I like the overall atmosphere at Tulane better, but the opportunity to have long term success is most important to me in a school. SMU's business school is ranked 30th in the nation and is know for good career services. So I was just wondering if anyone knew how many kids have internships/jobs before graduation or within a few months and just any experience with undergrad business. Thanks for any input!

Tulane has an extremely strong business school. Forget about rankings, they are meaningless. I don’t even know what Tulane’s business school is ranked, but it could be 15 or it could be 45 and I would tell you the same thing. Especially at the undergrad level. Way too many variables for rankings to have any validity.

Besides, you will be taking something like 70% of your coursework in areas other than your major. You could easily change majors, no matter how much you are sure you won’t right now. I recently heard a statistic that about 80% of undergrads change their major at least once. Sounds a bit high to me, but even if it is 2/3 (which is the amount I had always heard previously) it is obviously possible. My point being that you should choose the school that you think fits you best overall, as long as they do have a good offering in what you initially want. Tulane certainly has that in spades.

Tulane business is especially well known for 3 areas: Finance, entrepreneurship and accounting. 99% of the accounting majors had solid jobs in their field within 3 months of graduation. I don’t have similar stats for the other areas, but I know they do quite well. Also, Tulane is well known for its business programs in the energy field. So I should have said 4 areas, at least. Of course it is solid in the other business offerings also, but those seem to receive a lot of positive press and acclaim.

SMU business has a great reputation and deservedly so. But Tulane’s business school is absolutely fantastic as well, and has a very dynamic vibe to it. JMHO, but I think it is a wash as far as the two business schools go, so you should lean towards the university that you think fits you best overall. FYI and BTW, New Orleans is considered one of the hot cities for start-ups now, especially in IT.
