Senior Year
Extra gpa boosting classes

Hi I want to go into premed and I'm planning on taking the MCAT in january of junior year and then in april. I want to know if I picked the correct courses to take before the MCAT (everything before second semester junior year). Also do I need to take microbiology for the MCAT or would any other science courses be beneficial before the MCAT? I'll be done with my biology degree plan in three years because i got alor of ap credit. However should I take some art classes and statistics and stuff for med school? does med school even care about my free electives? Should I take any courses in the summer? Furthermore would my planned schedule be too stressful...especially second semester freshman year? How hard would genetics and molecuer bio be together? I am good at memorizing more than logical thinking. I also have a strong background in gen chem, bio and algebra based physics because I took AP courses for all of them and I got 4's. But I know that college classes will be harder. Any ideas about volunteer work, etc? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Sorry for all the questions, but I am so lost:(

* I’m planning on taking the MCAT in january of junior year and then in april.*

Do not plan on taking the MCAT twice. The MCAT is not like the SATs where it’s ok to take the exam multiple times. Plan on taking the MCAT one time only.

ok i’ll take it in april then. but any other advice?
Can someone please help me with my classes…please?
Thanks

I think the course sched is fine.

I don’t know how taking “GPA boosting” classes senior year will help if you’re applying to med schools during summer between junior/senior year.

Not sure how that all works, but I would think that if you’re applying during THAT summer, than the GPAs that AMCAS calculates will be with Frosh, Soph, Jr year grades (and any previous college coursework)…not including senior year grades. But, I could be wrong.

M2CK, you’re right. If you apply during the summer after your junior year, your senior year grades aren’t available to med schools and aren’t considered during the application process. Med school don’t ask for grades again until after you’re accepted and are about to formally enroll. You have to send a final transcript and proof that you’ve completed your bachelor’s.

Oh ok. I guess I have to rework my schedule then. Thanks:) But which classes do you think are essential for the MCAT? Thanks to both of you.

“)Ochem 2
2)Genetics
3)Anatomy and Physiology 1
4)Moleculer Cell Bio”

-Way way too much in one semester, huge overkill.
Another note, there is not reason to take MCAT 2 times. Both of them will count. What if you do worse second time? It would be a bummer. Plan to take it once.

According to D. who took MCAT on spring of Junior year, genetics and physiology were essential for it. She has never had overloaded schedule like yours. GPA is very important. Do not kill it. Having various great EC’s is very important. Spending time with your friends is of great value to keep you grounded and happy. Unhappy misearable person will not do well in school.

Is that the only section that’s overloaded? The problem I’m having is that I don’t know how to finish all the classes I need before the MCAT without overloading. Any suggestions would be nice.

Second semester freshman year is also pretty loaded especially with several “weed out” classes in there and I assuming that there will be labs with some of the classes as well.

Don’t forget that O chem and others will have regular significantly long lab reports due as part of the work load. Have you discussed this schedule with a pre-med advisor at your school? It seems awfully concentrated.

These posters are right…

“)Ochem 2
2)Genetics
3)Anatomy and Physiology 1
4)Moleculer Cell Bio”

…and second semester frosh year are crazy…move some of those GPA-boosting classes into those semesters.

Just take what you have to…and as Miami says…include genetics and physiology before the MCAT.

Do you have to major in bio??? Can’t you major in that other interest???

Since you say that you have AP credits (which may satisfy Core/GE)…can you do something like…

Frosh 1
Bio I
Chem I
Cal I
lighter/GE/Core

Frosh 2
Bio 2
Chem 2
major req’t
lighter or GE/Core

Soph 1
Ochem I
Physics I
major req’t
lighter or GE/Core

Soph II
Ochem II
Physics II
major req’t
lighter or GE/Core

Junior I
Physiology
major req’t
major req’t
elective

Junior II
major req’ts
major req’ts
Genetics
lighter

Senior year…do whatever’s left for major req’ts or for fun.

(Do you have Frosh Comp credits???)

Others can tweak this as needed.

"Any suggestions would be nice. "

-You started out way too slow. Freshman first semster is underloaded. Don’t you have some AP’s (math, English, humanities are the most useful)?

If you want to ease into college life – which I recommend for any anonymous poster with whom I have no knowledge of your HS preparation, nor the college to which you will matriculate:

Frosh: Chem & Calc/Stats
Soph: Bio & Organic
Jr: Physics & Biochem (one semester type) & Physiology/Genetics (one semester type)

Alternatively, since you received a 4 in AP Bio, skip the semester of Gen Bio which focuses on Enviro/Botany/Populations and take Molec Cell instead.

My advisor said I have to take these freshman semester. Because these courses aren’t offered for juniors and seniors.

Thanks for all the advice. I will see what I can do. Thanks:)

Your second semesters, freshman and sophmore year, look like suicides to me. But if you think you can handle it, then go for it.
