Undergrad degree: Major or minor in biomedical engineering?

So I am very interested in biomedical engineering as a major, but I have heard that it is better to major in a traditional engineering degree and minor in biomed engineering. Is this true? Do you know of people who have experienced trouble getting a job at an engineering firm after getting an undergrad biomed engineering degree?

It is hard to find job and pay is low for BME. It is because BME is still a very new field. You will learn lots of things after 4yrs but you will not know anything in depth. I would suggest doing ME or EE then doing BME for grad school. Also, ppl with ME or EE degree can do BME job.

I like this fantasy world where "ppl with ME or EE degree can do BME job."

What do you think of when you think of biomedical engineering? I find many people think many different things. It is possible to take a more traditional major with greater career opportunity and still have a shot at some/most of the biomedical engineering degree type jobs.

what sort of major will go well with a BioE minor? ChemE, EE or ME? or does it not matter as long as it is something conventional?

I... don't think that mechanical engineering has a lot to do with biomedical... Dunno about elec, but I think it's in the same boat as mechanical with respect to biomed overlap...

My degree has a ridiculous amount of mechanical engineering overlap and I haven't taken biology since sixth grade life science... I think I might remember what the heart and lungs do... I certainly wouldn't want to trust someone like me with designing a replacement for said organs. ;)

mechanical engineering overlaps with biomedical in terms of biomechanics, orthopedics, prosthetics, tissue engineering (making sure tissue/bone can handle repetitive/heavy stress, etc.)... electrical engineering might focus more on prosthetics and bioinstrumentation (diagnostic devices and robots that can, say, perform surgical procedures, etc).

the best major that goes well with BME is the one that (a) you're most interested in and (b) is compatible with what aspect of BME you want to do.
