Undergrad Degrees

I am wanting to pursue a career in politics and was wondering which would be best? As of right now I am a entering Freshman and my major is International Affairs. I want to travel around the world working in a political atmosphere, but I also want to eventually work in the U.S. as a political figure as well. I was wondering which second degree would be better? Political Science or Public Administration? Thank you for your opinions!

You want to travel the world and eventually run for office? Join the navy.

The traditional route would be to major in History, followed by Law school. But, Law school is expensive these days. If you want to travel the world, an International Affairs/MBA combination with a foreign language proficiency might help out. Of course, that’s not cheap either. You may enjoy Political Science, but I’m not sure it that’s the major to pick if you want to get elected to public office. People like to elect candidates who have made something of themselves outside of politics first. Check out the backgrounds of individuals who are successful at what you want to do.

I would recommend NOT assuming that you will always be interested in politics and just major in something that you can see yourself doing for the rest of your life if you lose interest in politics. You may find that living under the microscope is not all that it’s cracked up to be.

I’d take a look at what degrees alumni in politics have pursued:
