Well, I've seen plenty of threads saying an undergrad. business mgmt. degree is worthless and only the MBA will be useful. I'm wondering what my undergrad major should be if I want to get into Human Resources. I also have an interest in Economics...math to an extent. Thanks.

Hey, well I can’t really answer the question you’re asking… but I can tell you a friend of mine is studying business admin. and has interned as assistant in human resources. I mean, I don’t really know the correct path to a career in human resources, but I’m pretty much sure you can study any business related major and then gear your efforts in that way. :)

Appreciate the response Chris.

I was actually thinking about an econ. major, but I don’t really know how much it will benefit me in the future. However, it does seem like a lot of people say that HR doesn’t require a degree as much as raw experience.

As far as business goes, I do think a major in economics or finance is better than one is business admin. But then again, you have to check if you like those. Plus, Human Resources is a lot about management, psychology and labor law… so you can get knowledge on these subjets from a double major, minor or certificate program, etc. What I am certain about is that, just like all business related majors, experience is very very important. And also getting a MBA later on!

I’d go with the Econ major, you can do just about anything with it and it’s seen as more rigorous than any business major unless you’re at Wharton (which by the way only offers BS Econ though there are concentrations) or MIT.

As you get into the corporate world you’ll be exposed to lots of new opportunities and may well like something better than HR, so it’s good to have a broad base. Since you like math, consider a math minor. Econ plus math will make you a great candidate for lots of jobs.
