Undergrad International Relations

Hi. I know a couple of good colleges which offer an IR major, but they all seem to be reaches. I need some help finding match/safety schools. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

STATS:
ACT: 31
SAT IIs: 770 Math II, 740 Chem, 700 Bio
APs: 5 BC Calc, 5 Comp Sci, 4 Chem

Been in all honors classes (taken hardest possible schedule)
I go to a private school where a GPA of 94% is top 10% of class

My GPA: 91% (so probably top 20% (my school does NOT rank), though super rigorous curriculum. For example, it is not normal to take Multivariable Calculus as a senior).

Senior classes, first quarter grades:
Multivariable Calc (H) - 100%
AP Physics C - 90%
AP Stats - 100%
English - 80%
French - 95%

Extracurriculars:
Varsity Tennis (10th - 12th)
Chess club president (10th - 12th)
170 hours community service
Math team

I know of Georgetown, JHU, Tufts, Ivy leagues, GW, and American.
Are there any that match my stats though?

Thanks.

Take a look at Macalester. American should be in low match to safety range.

How are you fixed for money? Are you looking for merit or need-based aid?

American should not be difficult with those scores. Middlebury has a wonderful international studies program and it should be a low reach with an ACT 31. Also, they allow you to submit 3 SAT II’s instead of SAT I or ACT which may be an interesting option because it makes you look a bit more impressive.

Check out Boston University, one of the few universities that actually has a separate IR dept.
[Department of International Relations Departments College of Arts & Sciences Academics | Boston University](International Relations » Academics | Boston University)

American should be safe, GW a match and JHU, Gtown and Tufts look like reasonable reaches.

Thanks everyone.

I’ll check out Macalester.
I didn’t know that option was available at Middlebury…Yeah, that could be interesting.
I forgot about BU, I had heard they had a separate IR department that was pretty good.

Can anyone else think of any other matches?

Maybe Dickinson ¶, Richmond and University of Rochester. Best of luck!

Claremont McKenna is a reach worth looking into.

U Denver has a highly regarded program and would probably be a safety.

Agreed. You need a safety you can afford. For most people, that is a public school in their state.

check out college confidential’s college search function… put in scores, majors, where you want to study, etc…
