While looking at the top ranked business schools, I'm seeing that some of them do not offer an accounting undergrad major. If I wanted to get my CPA I know I need 150 credit hours...so, how does that work? Would I major in something along the lines of econ and then pursue a masters in accounting?

There are two ways of becoming an accountant.
Accounting undergraduate (the fastest way)
Masters in accounting (the hard and long way, because others who have studied accounting will get a head start on you. And you have little to no experience with accounting.)

Keep in mind that in economics you learn little to no accounting skills at all.

Btw, you cannot have economics as your major and become an accountant.

Thanks for your response! Clearly accounting is not the way to go if looking into IB, correct? I’d be better with a BBA most likely, right?

“Btw, you cannot have economics as your major and become an accountant.”

That is not true. You can become an accountant or a CPA by having a degree in economics, but you will need to take 24 or 30 accounting credits along with your economics degree. I have herad of and seen people who have business degrees outside of accounting, who are working as accountants.

itsme932,

I would recommend you to it the other way around: get a bachelors in accounting and a masters in economics. After that, you will be able to become a CPA, work at IB, and even teach accounting and economics at a college level.

Thanks Tosh! I appreciate the response!

A large part of investment banking is accounting. During interviews for summer analyst positions at banks, they will ask you accounting questions. Regardless of whether or not your school offers an accounting major, you should definately take a couple accounting classes.

A Bachelors or Masters degree in accountancy is a good idea. If you dont want to major in economics, you typically can include elective courses in micro-econimics as part of your business or accounting degree program. I would recommend that you check out your options at Bentley University, a leading business university near Boston.

^ Hmmm first post pushing a “leading college” in the Boston area? Interesting
