I am aware that most pre-meds are science majors but that does not necessarily have to be the case. However, I was wondering what advantage or disadvantage someone would have if he or she majored in something from the social sciences or humanities in terms of med school admissions. I'd appreciate any info, including statistics. Thanks.

lol there are sooo many of these posted.

It could potentially be to your advantage to major in something besides sciences, like social sciences or humanities, for many reasons. Two of the most important reasons are as follows:

You will set yourself apart from the majority of the applicant pool who are science majors and who are basically competing with eachother to stand out. Being a humanities major already accomplishes this diversity. (That is if your GPA, EC'S, and MCATS are very competative)

Medical Schools are looking for "well-rounded" individuals who are educated in various fields in addition to the typical sciences.

Again, it doesnt matter what your major is AS LONG AS YOUR GPA, MCATs, AND EC'S are competative.

As for statistics, they are all out there. But they are pretty worthless in my opinion. Its just like extraneous information, your major isnt even a factor in medical school admissions. It may come up in an interview, but ive been told thats it.

The stats will show that math majors have a higher acceptance percentages into medical schools. But this is only because a small number apply, but those that apply have gotten in, raising the % significantly. This was probably because they were just exceptional students. This, however, doesnt mean the MAJORITY of students accepted to medical schools are math majors. The majority of applicants are obviously science majors. But since there are so many, their acceptance percentage is low. This is why i dont like those stats, they dont tell me anything meaningful.

yeah, i figured that this topic has probably already been beaten to death. thanks for your thorough answer though, doogie. can someone link me to previous threads similar to this one?
