Undergrad not that important?

Just wondering if any CCers thought (like many medical doctors and lawyers have told me) that going to some amazing top tier school (like HYPSM) is not as important as getting into a top graduate school?

bump........

top grad school is much better.

BUmp..........

I've been told by several doctors and lawyers that where you go to Grad school is A LOT more important than where you go to undergrad school. This is why I really hate it when people give me crap for not looking at any of the ivies.

ya, but ivy league experience is better than a non-ivy. in my view

If you get into an ivy and do well, you will have a much better than average chance at a top grad school. If you go to a lesser undergrad school and do spectacularly, you have a chance at a top grad school. If you do poor at either school, you're screwed. It may very well be harder to do well at an ivy league than at a state school, but not necessarily harder than it is to do spectacularly at a state school. The thing is, most top professional school programs accept about 1 in 20 applicants. So don't choose an undergraduate school based on where you think you want to go for professional school. Choose based on where you think YOU"d get the best education.
