undergrad painting

What are the top programs for painting major - preferably not pure "art schools", but universities with strong art programs?

Syracuse has a very strong fine art program. If you are interested in Studio art, some of the LACs such as Williams, Skidmore etc. would be good choices.

Wash U St Louis has a strong art program, but not necessarily painting. You need to investigate Wash U.

Brown University not only has a strong art program taught by a number of RISD graduates, but you can take some courses at RISD.

Yale traditionally has repudably one of the strongest art programs in the US.

This should get your started

Thanks, taxguy. I sent you a PM.

Do you have a geographic preference? Virginia Commonwealth Univ. in Richmond has a painting program which is listed in the top ten in the country.

taxguy's list is indeed a good start. My son's criteria were small and medium sized colleges with good art studio and art history programs and this was his list:
Williams (where he ended up)
Wesleyan
Hamilton
Kenyon
Skidmore
Conn College
Brown
Yale

I would add Vassar (though I haven't visited) and Smith, if female.

Thanks for the sugestions!
She is a female, but would not consider any all-girls schools. There is no real geographic preference, but cold weather is a definite disadvantage...
She also does not want LACs (too small, and Studio Arts, even when strong, are usually limited).
Brown and Yale would probably be great, but I am afraid that they will be too much of a reach. She might have a chance stats-wise, but she is not saving the world in her free time in any way - just painting and socializing...

Any schools with rolling admissions?

RIT has rolling admission.

nngmm, she might also take a look at University of Michigan. Strong (and BIG) art department plus rolling admissions.
