Undergrad Research

How hard is it to get research opportunities (preferably in chem) as a freshman with no previous research experience? Well, I worked at JPL, but that doesn't count, because it was engineering. ;)

Depends on the department and how flexible you're willing to be.

I saw a flyer and ended up working in the Gilbert lab (behavioral psych) first semester freshman year. I have no prior research experience whatsoever. I also found a summer job in the Buckner lab (brain scanning + psych).

I'm not sure if chem works exactly the same, but I feel like professors will be very welcoming if you send them an eager email expressing interest (sorry for the alliteration!). If you're coming to Harvard this fall, I can give you some names of profs I've had that might be worth asking.

thanks for the help. I am making my college decision now and just thought I'd factor in availability of undergrad research. :)

My son, a freshman, just got a research position at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute for the summer. However, he did have substantial research experience in high school.

Do harvard have a undergraduate business program?

No. Harvard offers economics, but not a "management" or "finance" business program.

Donemon,

Did your son compete in the Intel STS?

Yes, and he was a finalist (2005).
