I'm thinking of doing some research or maybe working in a lab during my spring semester (freshman year). Is there anything I can do now or during my fall semester to ensure that I get a good position somewhere? Where does one find out about research opportunities or lab positions anyway?

I'm going in as an engineer; what sort of research or work in a lab would I be doing?

Sometimes lab jobs are posted on the student job listing site, professors will often mention research opportunities in class or you can talk to engineering advisors and they can help you find a lab.

As a freshman you might not do much to start out...but if you stick with and show dedication you can move up the ranks fast.

Thanks. Yea...I expect to be designated coffee guy by the profs for a few weeks but I don't mind as long as I eventually get somewhere.

Anyone else? Can any engineers here describe their freshman year experience when it came to research and lab work?
