undergrad research

when should students email faculty members about possibly interning in their labs? there is one professor whose work i'm really interested in, and quite frankly, i'm really impatient about becoming a lab rat. :) would it be too early to email him now to see if i could start fall of freshmen year (i'm an incoming freshmen) ...should i instead email him now to express my interest, but state that i would like to start spring of freshmen year? or...should i wait until school starts and after a few classes to request an internship for spring of freshmen year?

o_O

If you are interested ASAP, you should email him now to express your interest…a “resume” might be appropriate–like the one you attached to your UMD application. If you are in the honors program, you should plan to take the HONR 101 class (instead of HONR 100)…I assume they still have it, but it may not be held until 2nd semester??? There is an undergrad research program on campus, you could search for it on the site. Via the HONR class, D saw a list of opportunities, and loved what she was doing 2nd semester freshman year. (she developed a website for a prof in a different science dept. than she’s in). Her position was unpaid, but she loved it.
