Undergrad Universities preferred rankings from India

Just curious to know how one would rank US universities based on its reputation in India

Roughly by the US News ranking. With some minor changes among the lesser known unis.

Any particular brand name of the University that is popular among the students - like the student craze or the trend?

Purdue accepts every half-good Indian.

So does Drexel.

Loads of people apply to the Ivy Leagues, MIT, and the need-blind universities.

What’s wrong with Purdue is what I don’t get. I know it’s a good school but why is it so obsessed with accepting Indians?

I have a red star on almost every thread now.

Lack of status symbol is the only problem with Purdue. Its engineering program has a good reputation in the industry. People obsessed with status symbols either don’t understand or don’t want to accept reality.

Why is it a safety for all Indians and why is it accepting every half good Indian like aniruddh said then? I’m just trying to figure it out. I keep hearing the name thrown out everytime any engineering aspirant talks safeties.

You can look at it this way: Purdue recognizes Indians’ aptitude for Math and Science? :expressionless:

Purdue is amazing for engineering I must say, but it’s too big a university so I guess that’s why they accept anyone who even remotely qualifies.

I remember priyanka keswani (the way way way way way below average stats girl who got into michigan) stating that purdue rejected her but then she appealed, they told her to give her the TOEFL (because she got some 450 in cr in one SAT) and then they accepted her :s

pixie, What do you mean by “half good Indian”? Based on stats? I don’t agree with this generalization that people who enter college with less than stellar stats from Indian schools are significantly less capable of doing well in college. American education system accommodates different learning styles and student-teacher relationship is much friendlier. This atmosphere tends to bring out the best in every student. Many of these “half-good” Indians really blossom after they come here. I think these “half good” Indians must have a good track record at Purdue and they are a welcome addition to student body dominated by kids from rural farming communities.

I wanna go to college really badly. I have had enough of my maa chuda school. I hate it here. Why did I shift here from my amazingly-world-famous-and-affluent-yet-cheaper-fees school?

Note: I just came back from visiting my alma mater so I always tend to get emotional.

Not my words Tipputippytoppy. I just quoted Anir. Oh and you’re wrong about all ‘half good Indians’ doing ‘so well’ when they reach the US. That might be the case for some but not all. Many Indians(and Indians are many) apply just to go for a good life away from mommy and daddy to ‘get some action’ or because they think that life is going to be so much easier there. They are disillusioned by the swanky western life. See a (recent) particluar poster on this forum on gap years and you’ll know what I mean. I am sure you’ll agree with me. :)

Purdue sounds good of course. I just had that little query and since I’m not applying to engg. schools I posted it here for you guys to answer.

These Indians don’t survive 4 yrs of sci/engineering at places like Purdue.

pixie, you are right about the American Dream thing brought up in another thread.

That’s not true with the whole populace having that mindset tippu…

It’s like they’re good at studies but they choose to go to the usa for the added “action” lol

But yeah imo a university there is tougher because of daily evaluation and regular tests.

Yes and you just can not relax like you do when all that matters is how you do in the final exams.

^ I like the sound of daily evaluation tests. Gets the concepts down pat. We have that in most good schools in Delhi too, except it doesn’t count toward the finals.
My chem tutor has a test every week on the topic that is going on atm, and I must say it is very very useful.
I used to wish it to be like that for every subject before I got embroiled in this application stuff. Now I’m just grateful I don’t have to find out how stupid I am in every subject every week.

Pixie I’m sure you top, so yeah.

Daily evaluation is awesome! In my old school, we had weekly tests. Counted for 20%

I believe that’s what helped me get a 90+ in ICSE!
