Undergrad USF vs FSU?

Take away the USF med school research money and you have…?

This is why proclaiming research expenditures without showing where they go makes a difference. Last time I looked USF Med has ONE person or group (diabetes research, as I recall) in the med school producing the bulk of USF’s research dollars. This is great for USF Med, but not so great for a USF physics major.

If I’m not mistaken, didn’t USF begin as a medical school? That’s basically USFs marquee program.

Research is one of the stated main missions of the USF COM: not so at FSU’s COM. A large portion of USF’s research is health related; USF’s COM is doing what it’s supposed to be doing getting grants for research, just like any other major university with a medical college doing research activity.

I know of people who were rejected from FSU, but accepted to UF. I also know of people who chose FSU over UF due to its strength in certain programs.

Sure, UF is selective, but for all the wrong reasons (rejecting qualified non-minorities, accepting less qualified minorities). FSU could probably do the same if it wanted.

DS is a UF graduate. DD was accepted at UCF, USF, UF and has chosen to go to FSU in the fall with a molecular biology major/pre-med. She researched the opportunities at FSU and found the folks there much more interested in helping her achieve her goals. Costs a little more but we feel it is worth it.

The point, Lizard, is that FSU achieved the highest total NSF investment of all Florida universities without having a med school (which was only granted to FSU in 2000). This means Florida State has a substantial investment in the basic sciences, not just those related to medicine. While medical research dollars are the cash cow for USF and UF (now FSU is entering the medical arena, which typically takes decades) FSU accomplished the feat with emphasis in the basic sciences, of which physics is the main player with the Mag Lab (the only National Lab in Florida). I am ok with this until the med school and the related medical infrastructure (TMH, for example, recently became a Level II Trauma Center) develops through a growing population.

In this way FSU is similar to UC Berkeley, which also achieved its rank without a med school.

I also know someone who chose USF over an Ivy league school.

I also know of many people who chose UCF over UF…

But does that mean its better than the other school? No. UF is better than FSU hands down, nearly double the ranking. FSU has a good political science and music program thats it.

I don’t think I ever said it was a better school; I was merely giving the OP instances that show that not all FSU students are UF rejects.

I just now realized that you are the OP. Stupid mistake on my part. >_<

I am now aware of the cause of your, well, attitude and I am sorry.

I’m so tired of these UF is better than FSU threads and blah blah blah and FSU better than UF in X department.

And I’m a current UF student.

UF vs FSU acadamics = SAME $hit

If your planning to go to grad school your last education where you receive it will be equally identical if you come from either school.

UF undergrad with UM masters = SAME $hit
FSU undergrad with UM masters = SAME $hit

Both are Tier 1 institutions and well respected universities and are both going to get you a respectable well paying job.

UF undergrad GPA 3.1
FSU undergrad GPA 3.98 who’s going to get hired FSU

FSU GPA 3.08
UF GPA 3.98 who’s going to get hired UF.

Yes internships matter to but you know my point.

Go to the school where you think you will succeed and be the best you could be as a student there period, but ofcourse try to stay towards tier 1 institutions

And I’m a current UF junior FINANCE MAJOR transferring to FSU for Fall 2012. Yes business major from UF to FSU not theater or poli science or psychology major. BUSINESS student transfer

GPA: 3.83

Well said, Laz.

There are so many important factors that go into making a matriculation decision other than USN&WR rankings.

I have met many impressive FSU students that are very successful in their studies and who are going to be very successful in their future endeavors. All had multiple offers from a number of quality universities and chose to attend FSU. They will all be prepared to compete in the future against the better students from UM, UF, and beyond.
