Undergrads being a TA?

Can undergrads work as teaching assistants at UChicago? Particularly in one of the science divisions?
Also do students get paid or earn credit for being TAs?

yes

CS has something similar

Yes, I was a TA for two different biology classes in my 4th year. For one class I was the sole undergrad TA and the other 3 were grad students. For the other, I think it was mostly undergrads. I did get paid, though I don’t remember how much. I remember comparing notes with a friend who was a TA in chem and he got paid a lot more than me, so I think it varies by department.

It was challenging but a great experience. When I later TA’d as a graduate student elsewhere, I got to skip to TAing some fun, smaller courses because of my experience at Chicago, while most of my grad student friends were first TAs for the giant biology super-intro courses.

I was a TA for five different biology courses in my 4th year. You get approximately $1000 per course (slightly more if you’re a lab TA), but you don’t get credit for it.

That’s awesome news! Does anybody know which courses are available and which ones pay the most?
Also what year do you have to be in in order to be a TA?

Students in the math department can start as early as their second year.

@biochemnerd123, does this mean you got accepted off waitlist?

@ihs76 yes! :slight_smile: with a gap year
