UCLA has more undergraduate asians than undergraduate whites. What do current students feel about this, and what race are you? Is there a lot of race interaction?

ehh… dont really care. my high school’s demographics is very similar to ucla’s. We also had a slightly higher percentage of asians than of whites.

I mean, the kids there are cool, social, generally attractive, and nice right? thats all that matters really

The Caucasians prefer UCSB or USC. ;)

there are a lot of asians but they come from many countries (china, korea, japan, vietnam, india, but i think you really mean oriental)

Im hispanic and love when races interact but thats not always the case at ucla.
every race has its groups that only hang out with each other some don’t even try to make friends with other races
of course there are people that like to interact with anyone regardless of their race but even then dating another race may be off limits to them
look for people that seem to interact with anyone and those will generally be the nicer easy to get along with people
overall there is not A LOT of race interaction but a good enough amount at least among normal people

^ So caucasians hang out with caucasians and asians with asians? That sounds awful to be honest.

I don’t think we are racist. For me, I’d love to make friends with Caucasians. But I feel like they are very hard to talk to. I guess every race just need to take an initiative talk to other race…

so HumorUS, are you saying UCLA caucasians are racist to asians and thats why there’s segregation?

No, read what he wrote again.

And check your sarcasm detector while you’re at it

^ I interpreted his sarcasm as caucasians are actually the ones racist to asians, so what do YOU think he meant

wow i thought you were sarcastic, but ok thats good since im not a dick asian like that

Asians are typically South Campus majors. The farther north and even mid-campus is more Caucasian. That’s why walking up and down Bruinwalk, can be less of an Asian fashion show and more Caucasian, because it will have more from the mid and north areas of campus, though there’s a side route from the south that merges onto the Walk.

And as above, that’s why of the 737 applicants to med school in 2009, some 450 were Asian, per aamc.org.

I’m Korean. I determine my friends by the type of people they are, not race.

In high school, I had good relationships with pretty much every race white, black, hispanic, middle eastern, Asian, etc. However, I mostly hung out with Indians and Chinese because they tended to be most academic orientated. Also hung out with a couple of white people whom I felt were decent.

The Koreans at my high school liked to go out and play too much, “SOME” of the blacks and hispanics did some shady things, and most of the white kids didn’t care about school and always partied. This is not to say that some of the other Asians didn’t do some of this stuff as well.

Bottom line, if you’re an honest, friendly, nice, driven person that will challenge me to become a better a person, I will like you and be friends with you (if you want).

Oh short story: I got kicked out my house senior year because of crazy Asian parents, and a white friend took me in. Temperatures were literally freezing outside, and I appreciate my white friend tremendously for this.

Was it an A- or a B+

I bet it was because he got rejected from some college and ended here at UCLA. -.-

Hahaha, actually it was because I played microstakes online poker. I turned 18, decided to put in a little money on Full Tilt Poker, and then played $0.01/$0.02 blinds poker. They got pretty ****ed and decided to kick me out of the house -.-

Actually, my dad was really proud when he found out I got into UCLA. He’s a businessman so he really thinks in terms of cost efficiency. Living in California, he felt like UC Berkeley and UCLA were the two best schools for their price (the only schools worth the extra money being some the Ivys and Stanford).

lol kicked out for microstakes… my mom would be content if she knew i only stuck to .01/.02 -_-

you’re an adult and you really didn’t do anything illegal, should’ve tried reasoning with them.

I’m Caucasian, and I came from an almost completely white, very small Catholic high school, so I found coming to UCLA to be a big change-- but I soon realized that a school’s diversity affects its character so much more than I thought it did back in high school. It’s so refreshing to be in a place where everyone isn’t from the same bubble of existence; everyone has different worldviews and circumstances and everyone I meet has a unique, interesting life experience. Yes, my friends back home chide me for always suggesting (demanding?) pho when we go out to eat (lol), but I’ve found that being closed-minded and unwilling to try new things won’t get you anywhere interesting, ESPECIALLY at UCLA. I mean, my life didn’t have any meaning at all before pho.

I’m Hispanic. If you look online at UCLA’s own statistics, you’ll see that while two out of every five undergrads is Asian, two out of every five grad students are Caucasian. when totaled, there are actually 1000 more Caucasians on campus than Asians. It’s not really that big of a deal imo.

@ 1netruesole: Hahaha don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind playing for big money, but yeah when you’re living with crazy Asian parents there’s no reasoning with them…

@ dylpkls91: I’m Asian, and I hate pho lol. I’d rather have a bacon cheeseburger, chili cheese dog, or pizza. LOVE white food hahaha.
