Hi all,
I posted a couple of threads seeking help for my college choices.

I am set on Rutgers but I need reassurance! I already paid my deposit before the May 1 deadline but I just want to be sure before it's too late. There are still spaces in Stony Brook and Suffolk but I am still thinking about it.

So as you may know I want to major in Journalism and may add a second major in Marketing or Finance (still not sure).

What made me reconsider Suffolk and stony brook is because my friends are are attending (my very close friends). So I need ur help! Do you think rutgers is the best choice for me? Considering location near NYC AND PHILLY.

Btw I am an international student if that matters.

The prices for each school:

Rutgers: $28k
Suffolk (got a scholarship and honors program) so it would cost $15k

Stony brook would cost around $19k

I could afford Rutgers and the price is within my budget so it's perfect and I won't be in debt. However, which do you think would be the best for me if I work super super hard and try my best! ? Also if I ever have the chance to work in the states I would definitely want to work in NYC or LA (maybe even Chicago) but not Boston though. Would Suffolk take me far outside New England. (Since I am an international I def care about the colleges rep nationally!)

Thanks!! I appreciate your help!

Will post this in Rutgers, Suffolk and Stony Brook forum as I want all the opinions!

You can look that up yourself.
But for the price difference, Rutgers is not worth $36K more than Stony Brook. I would probably even say if both were the same price, pick Stony Brook from an academic perspective.

TomsRiversParent, thank you so much for your time and effort! I appreciate your help (just a small note: the price difference is $9k not $36k but I got your point). Thanks

Also which you felt more confident at/comfortable at when visiting could be a consideration. Fit is another important factor to consider, since you mentioned you won’t be graduating with debt from either school.

Shawnspencer, I will check your link now but I just wanted to say as an international student I did not have the opportunity to visit. However after researching I came to the decision of Rutgers as it has a good business program and it’s journalism program is good (teaches both journalism and media) which expands my career path a bit. Also some of the students interned at major media outlets and shows (Saturday Night Live!). And not to mention the proximity to NYC and PHILLY!

I checked the link and the OP was in a very similar situation! As for your previous question, it’s not too late because Stony Brook sent me an email telling me that there are still spaces available and that I have a chance.

Stony Brook has the better journalism program.

Rutgers has the better Business (Finance/Marketing) program with career links to WALL STREET (Road to Wall Street Program)

Rutgers is ranked much higher 69 while Stony Brook is 82

Stony Brook is cheaper

Rutgers is more known outside of the East Coast and the WORLD (more international) - public Ivy

Rutgers is between Philly (1hr15 min) and nyc (45-60 mins)

Rutgers is in New Brunswick (more urban and lively than Stony Brook)

Rutgers is more diverse

Stony Brook is in a much quiet area of LI

Central New Jersey is much cheaper than Long Island NY in living costs.

I am sort of torn… I like both schools but I think I am more biased towards Rutgers.

I also don’t know if I will be able to do my Masters or not so I want to go to the best school I possibly can (but can’t afford the $40k + price tag so these are my options now)

What do you think? Should I just settle with Rutgers? Are they viewed as equal on the east coast (especially NYC)?

Why are you biased towards Rutgers? It’s no Princeton. Rankings seem really real right now but once you step into a college campus you will realize that it’s just bricks and lawns and work. Rutgers can’t open more doors than Stony Brook. If you want a job, you’ll have to be talented and hardworking and just a really compelling potential recruit, especially as an international student. It all depends on you, unless you to a school with a big name (think Yale). So basically, Rutgers is NOT worth a $9k/per year premium over Stony Brook.

In terms of job opportunities, neither school can open you more doors than the other, particularly because you are an international student. You will have to demonstrate shrewd initiative to get a job in the US and get sponsored. Save your money and just go to Stony Brook. I would even consider Suffolk if I were you, but an additional $12k for Stony Brook seems more justifiable.

Desie1, I don’t want to sound rude or antisocial but I don’t really care about the social life. I care about the academics, extracurriculars, and internships. Also I won’t be dorming, I will be living with relatives or friends.
