Undergraduate Business School - Santa Clara, Leavey vs SMU, Cox vs Miami University, Farmers

My son is deciding which undergraduate business program would be the best. He was accepted into Santa Clara’s Leavey School of Business. He was also accepted into SMU pre-business and will need to have a 3.5 GPA to be accepted into the Cox School of Business at the end of his sophomore year. Lastly, he was accepted into Honors at Miami University’s Farmers School of Business and received an annual $15,000 scholarship. We are from Southern California and he will want to eventually end up here. If money is not a consideration, would appreciate thoughts on these programs.

I’m biased towards SCU (alum) but I would think a big consideration is that your S wants to be in California in the end. SCU IS more well known in California and will carry more weight there than Miami or SMU. Hiring out of SCU in the bay area and throughout California is strong (depending on the economy, of course).

Hi! I am from TX and I applied to both SMU and SCU! My brother attended SCU’s Leavy School of Business for his undergrad and has had very good job opportunities, but because I am from the Dallas area, I know that SMU’s business school is top notch; Bloomberg Businessweek ranked it 23rd in 2016 undergraduate business schools! It is one of the top business schools in the country and the students there are really shaped into to determined and involved students. Many of the professors in SMU are well connected and will be able to give students opportunities ranging all the way from obviously Dallas, but also from Wall Street to the West Coast. I think that the curriculum at SMU is more intensive and in-depth, which will really benefit him if he wants proper education and training in the business field. SMU also does have a nationally well-known reputation that SCU cannot compare to. I do also love SCU and I think that both schools are great and will offer great opportunities to him regardless of where it is he wants to end up.
