my niece is from india and wants to go to a US business school:

sat verbal:660
sat math: 620
sat writing: 630

grade point average: 3.52

she's interested in majoring in management, and is considering the following schools: NYU, U Texas, Penn State, U Maryland, U Illinois, Emory, U Washington, U Michigan, Boston U, Boston College, Carnegie Mellon, USC, Wash U - St. Louis.

Which of these are appropriate reach, match and safeties? Any school we should be considering instead?

Most of those schools would be reaches (BC, CMU, Emory, Michigan, NYU, USC, UT-Austin and WUSTL) or matches (the rest of the universities on your list).

A good safety might be Indiana University-Bloomington, although it is more like a safe match than a true safety.

If your niece can improve her SAT by 50 points in each section, she will help her chances a great deal.

Indiana is definitely a safety. They give scholarships 6-7K/year to students with those credentials.

Anyways, here's my assessment.

NYU, SLIGHT REACH
U Texas, SLIGHT REACH
Penn State, MATCH
U Maryland, MATCH
U Illinois, MATCH/SLIGHT REACH
Emory, REACH
U Washington, MATCH
U Michigan, REACH
Boston U, MATCH
Boston College, SLIGHT REACH
Carnegie Mellon, SLIGHT REACH
USC, REACH
Wash U - St. Louis BIG REACH

im at BU right now.. and for SMG, BU's business program, the average SAT was 1285 i believe w/ the average rank being like 90%... so your niece would fit in very well.... also BU is extremely diverse in regards to international students... im in the SMG floor right now and am a frosh.. and I am having an excellent time... i absolutely love it... so def give it a look... it may def be a good fit for her

I am at BC right now, those numbers are really putting BC as a big reach I would think. most of the posts I have read on here about kids applying are usually around a 3.8.

What type of classes where taken? AP's Honors,

I think Carnegie-Mellon is a big reach too. Any opinions (because I'd like to apply there too with slightly better stats). I heard that they look carefully at SAT math and it should be in the 700s.

Carnegie Mellon would be a BIG reach since their business school is one of the toughest schools to get into at that unversity. Frankly, with current SATs and GPA, I think there is little chance for all the named schools except U Washington, Penn State, and University of Maryland and maybe USC. Sorry.
