Undergraduate Directing BA/BFA

Hey everybody. This is my first time posting on these forums. I was wondering if anyone knows of any good BA or BFA programs for directing (stage, not film). I'm looking for a school that is either in or very close to a city. Also, would undergraduate study of directing be more beneficial for getting into a directing grad school than a Theatre Arts degree? Thank you!

Here are a few threads that begin to answer your questions:

Carnegie Mellon has a BFA program in directing
I believe NYU - Playwrights Horizons does as well.

There are many schools that will offer the undergraduate training, education, and directing experiences.

People enter graduate school in directing from many different educational backgrounds. Generally, MFA Directing programs are looking for students who have been out working in the industry for a few years post undergrad.

Thank you very much! Oh, I was also wondering about undergraduate directing programs in Europe. If anyone knows about good European directing programs, that would be extremely helpful. Maybe I’ll start a new thread about that, but I’ll see where this one goes first.

By the way, I’m also looking for Theatre Arts majors with a concentration in directing. Also, I’m a senior in high school, and I’ve just decided to do theatre in college this year, so obviously it’s late for auditions. Luckily, I’ll be taking a gap year in Belgium, but it does mean that I’ll probably need a school that doesn’t require an audition.

You may find that it is easier for Theatre Studies/ Directing students to do interviews via skype and the DVD submissions.

Some info that may help people offer advice…

Are you an US Citizen? If not, are you a citizen of an EU country or of a non-EU country?

Have you been at an American/ International School abroad? Did you go to HS in the US? Did you go to a local public school in a foreign country?

What are your GPA and test scores?

Will colleges really let me interview through Skype? I hadn’t thought of that, thank you!

As for some info about me…

Yes, I’m a US Citizen, and I went to highschool here in the US. I’m graduating next month, but I’ll be spending the next year as a foreign exchange student in a high school in Belgium. I have about a 96 unweighted average and about 109 weighted. I scored 33 composite on the ACT: 35 English, 33 Math, 32 Reading, and 31 Science. For SAT Subject tests, I scored 740 in biology, 720 in Literature, and 710 in Math I. I am ranked third in my class of 150 at a good public high school.

Thank you, I hope that helps you to help me a bit. I appreciate it!

UNCSA has a directing BFA for 3rd and 4th year students. A few students who start here as actors at the end of their 2nd year decide to enter the directing program. Also, students with prior acting training equivalent or close to the first 2 years of UNCSA training can transfer into the directing program.

You should look into Fordham which is located in Lincoln Center, Manhattan. It is a BA program in a Jesuit school with a large core curriculum. My S is a Theatre major in the Performance/Playwriting tracks but one of his best friends is the only Directing major in the Class of 2014 and my S speaks very highly of him as being very impressive artistically and academically.

Admissions to the Directing track are very competitive but it is possible to be admitted to the university and minor in Theatre if you are not accepted into the program. Your high stats are likely to get you some merit $$ as well.

Good luck! :)

Oh by the way, do you know how competitive that full tuition scholarship at Fordham is? I’m sure it is very much based on your life outside of school, but do my stats line up?

I saw that Emerson has a Theatre Studies program with a directing track, and it doesn’t appear to require an audition. Same goes for Temple. Also, USC’s theatre arts BA doesn’t seem to require an audition. Can anyone confirm that?
