Undergraduate Film Programs.

Can anyone suggest a few good undergraduate Film/Cinema programs which include courses in Acting? I am looking for a compact course- with a bit of everything.

I would love to go for a double major in Film and Economics/Psychology/Business (whichever comination is possible)

I am from India, studying under the British system of education

My GPA, according to " http://www.cie.org.uk/docs/recognition/Calculating%20GPAs%20for%20IGCSE.pdf " is 3.82

I am presently studying the following GCE A-level subjects (similar to the American APs)-
Economics (CIE)
Pure Mathematics with Statistics(CIE)
Psychology (CIE)
Further Mathematics ( Edexcel- at least till AS-level- as a private candidate as the course isn't available at my school)

I have been involved in a bit of extra curricular activities (not much as there are hardlyany opportunies for High School Students here)-

I am a Freelance Reporter
I am a Karate Purple-Stripe belt
I do a bit of community service at school and outside
I am involved with the School Magazine
Stood second in class last year (though the classes at my school are very small)
I have participated in a few quizzes here and there

Will try to get involved in some more activities in my senior year.

The best ones are Tisch School of the Arts at NYU and USC School of Cinematic Arts. But a lot of other art schools have film programs, and a lot of liberal art schools have film studies majors (those focus more on analyzing films as opposed to making your own). Considering you’re interested in non-art subjects as well, I’d suggest looking into liberal arts schools and deciding on your specialization when you get around to graduate school.

Would it be a good idea to complete the One-Year Cinema Studies course (32 college credits) at the New York Film Academy and then transfer to a top notch University?

Would my application be more competitive then?

Do colleges/universities offer financial aid to such transfer students?

The big question is – do you want a career in film? If so, a “compact” course won’t do much for you, pick a school with an extensive program and good connections to the industry. If you just want an emphasis in film, explore good liberal arts colleges or good universities where they also have film/drama courses (Wesleyan, Fla State, UCLA come to mind.)

In my opinion, NY Film Academy won’t do much for you - it’s not a selective program, simply for those who have the money to do it.

nyu & usc are the tops

Oberlin has a cinema studies program that has a consortial agreement with NYU’s Tisch. You attend a spring semester at Tisch and take production classes that are not offered at Oberlin. Oberlin has very lax gen ed requirements, so it’s pretty easy to double major or major/minor. Also, if you take a class in the theatre dept., most likely you will be auditioning for a production, even if it’s not your major.

Taking both film & acting courses may be difficult at the best schools as these tend to be highly sought after programs with limited enrollment. Top undergraduate film schools include: USC, Northwestern University & NYU. The top schools for acting are NYU, Northwestern Univ. & the Juilliard School.
Also, “cinematic studies” & “film history” majors may be very different from filmmaking courses of study. Northwestern, for example, offers courses on filmmaking as well as courses for future film critics.

NYU and USC definitely, but also consider Emerson in Boston.

From friends who parents work in the industry and who applied to both programs USC and NYU. If you want the more urban indie artsy type of film school go to NYU while the film program at USC is more mainstream filmmaking.

Through his foundation George Lucas donated $175 million dollars to SC to build a state of the art cinematic arts complex and to add to SC’s endowment. The new complex has the latest in all aspects of film making.
Students report the classes are demanding. I do not know how much time one would have for classes in the fine School of Theatre at SC. Production is not the only major offered in CAS. Majors are offered in Animation and Digital Arts, Cinema-Television (Critcal Studies), Interactive Entertainment and Writing for Screen and Television.
If you have broad interests there are minors offered which might interest you at SC such as: Applied Theatre Arts, Communication for the Entertainment Industry, Interactive Media and the Culture of New Technologies, Interactive Multimedia, Visual Culture and Theatre.

I am worried about one thing. They British (International) System of Education is pretty different from the American one.
We have ‘school leaving exams’ also known as ‘board exams’ at the end of year 10 (O-levels), at the end of year 11 (AS-levels) and at the end of year 12 (A2-levels). The ‘AS’ and the ‘A2’ levels make up the complete A-level exams.

We have internal exams at school twice a year. In my case, the results for these internal exams aren’t that great (just above 70% aggregate, which is a B for us).
The board exam results are better.

Would I still be able to apply to the top notch colleges/universities with these results if my SAT scores, etc are good?

There are a lot of international students at USC. I’m sure USC is very familiar with other countries schooling system besides the USA.

University of Southern California is an excellent film school. It’s one of the most filmed campuses in America, and there’s plenty of opportunities in LA!

Can I apply for these programs without having any prior experience in Cinema/Film?

Also, can I opt for a double major at NYU?
