Why do so many people here insist on obsessing over the ivy League schools? I think that these schools are to blame for people faking having a passion for extra-curriculars and coercing students into giving up their lives for college.

What do you propose

I think you are making two incorrect generalizations:

People who obsess “over the ivy league schools” fake passions for extra-curriculars.

Perhaps this is true for a few, but I find that most people really choose to engage in activities that they enjoy outside of school. This is mostly true in my case (I say mostly because I do have some application builders in there), and probably so in many others.

That those same people give up their lives for college.

I don’t think “giving up their lives” describes anybody who is shooting for selective colleges.

As to the question of why people do obsess over these colleges, I think, in my case at least, it’s at least some form of sucess that is more tangible that a letter grade on a paper. It’s a vindication of my labor, in a sense.

If people aren’t trying to fake it, then why are there so many posts asking “what extra curriculars should I add?” and “What classes should I take (that I’m not even interested in) so that I will be accepted into College X?”
