As an upcoming high school senior planning to major in marketing, I've been looking at U.S. News and World Report and Business Week's rankings of undergraduate business schools both holistically and specifically in marketing. With many variations in rankings, I was wondering which source would be more reputable? For instance, Business Week ranks University of Richmond's Robin's School of Business as #12 overall and #1 in Marketing, while U.S. News and World Report ranks it much lower. I really liked the school when I saw it and would like to know whether or not Business Week's ranking was hype.

I'm also interested to hear any suggestions for universities in the South or Midwest with well respected business schools and good marketing programs. I'm from Texas, so UT's McCombs School of Business would be an obvious choice, but I would prefer to attend a liberal-arts university or private university with a much smaller student body.

Thanks!

elon, purdue, washU, unc-ch, Umichigan, usc, emory, carnegie mellon, the list goes on…

Without knowing much about you, I can share that i find the Business Week’s rankings to be strange. All rankings are suspect but BW’s are a work in progress.

I go to DePaul University in Chicago, IL and the undergrad Marketing major was ranked #11 in the United States.

Thanks LolyGAGHa, ncmentor, and arajput23. Any more opinions?

if you are looking at the midwest, UMich is very strong. My friend’s sister graduated from UMich Ross and got an offer for 90K (you read it correct, 90K IN MARKETING! GO FIGURE). While this is obviously EXTREMELY rare and she got immensely lucky (that firm now downsized and she is currently out of work and I think is looking to get her MBA), it shows that it is a very strong program if you make use of their resources.

Wow, that’s amazing. Her case might be rare but that kind of salary definitely shows the quality of their marketing program. I’ll definitely look more into UMich. Thanks creamthamoney!

there really isn’t much to say brah. Basically, don’t listen to the specific marketing rankings and go to what is generally considered the best business school you can go to and major in marketing there. Or, I’ve heard that econ majors (in case your school doesn’t have a business major) often can get jobs in marketing, so try that.

Marketing is a major you get from a business school, so a liberal arts college won’t be very helpful there. That said, US News has McCombs as #3 for marketing:
[Undergraduate business specialties: Marketing - Best Colleges - Education - US News and World Report](http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/college/spec-marketing)
It’s one spot below UMich and both are large schools with highly ranked business programs, which really is a must for good marketing jobs. The real difference is price. In-state versus out of state, you’ll probably spend at least twice as much per year going to UMich, and being from Texas, I doubt you’re used to cold weather like they have up there. To be honest, McCombs is one of your best bets for marketing no matter where you’re from, and you’re lucky enough to have in-state tuition. It’ll be very hard to justify going somewhere else. UT isn’t a bad place to be. For the record, the school of liberal arts is the biggest school at UT.
